Earlier this week Beverly Hills 90210 and Charmed actress Shannen Doherty, 44, confirmed that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer in March, and that it likely could have been avoided.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, this news came to light in the Los Angeles Superior Court when Doherty proceeded to sue Tanner Mainstain Glynn & Johnson, her former business management, for failing to pay "the medical insurance premiums she had through the Screen Actors Guild."

Doherty's complaint (which can be read in full here), obtained by THR, states:

In November 2013, SAG sent the premium invoice to Tanner Mainstain for Plaintiff's medical insurance coverage for the year 2014. However, Defendants ignored it, failed to pay it (without informing Plaintiff) and then promptly terminated their relationship with [Doherty] effective February 7, 2014.

Doherty was later told that had she had the insurance necessary to visit her doctor sooner, they may have been able to catch the cancer earlier and avoided the treatments she could be facing in the future:

Plaintiff was also informed that, had she been insured and able to visit her doctor, the cancer could potentially have been stopped, thus obviating the need for the future treatment (including mastectomy and chemotherapy) that Plaintiff will likely have to suffer through now.

Shannen Doherty spoke to People earlier and said that she is now undergoing treatment:

Yes, I have breast cancer, and I am currently undergoing treatment.
I am continuing to eat right, exercise and stay very positive about my life. I am thankful to my family, friends and doctors for their support and, of course, my fans who have stood by me

Despite her legal and health woes, Doherty took the time to write a quick, heartfelt message to her Twitter fans.

We all wish her the best and a speedy recovery.
