In 2011, a year after Green Day's: American Idiot became a broadway musical, rumor spread that the musical itself would be turned into a film. It was even another rumored that Tom Hanks wanted to direct the film. Rolin Jones has also been working on a screenplay since March 2014. But, who would play these suburban youth punkers?
Jamie Bell as Johnny
Johnny is a character who is sick of his same old boring life, in the same old boring town. This drives him angry and gives him the motive to move out of town, with no idea where he's going. Surprisingly enough, Jamie Bell acted in the Green Day music video Wake Me Up When September Ends.
Nicholas Hoult as Tunny
Tunny is another character who is also sick of his life and seeing his generation fall apart. He decides to join the army after seeing a television ad and is shipped off. Nick Hoult definitely can pull off soldier and rebel at the same time.
Daniel Radcliffe as Will
Will is the party goer who stays behind due to his girlfriend becoming pregnant. He chooses to get wasted and stoned instead of dealing with his problems. This would be a different role for Daniel Radcliffe, but we haven't seen anything he can't pull off.
Billie Joe Armstrong as St.Jimmy
In the musical, St. Jimmy is the alter ego of Johnny the main character. He's a drug dealer without a care in the world. I have no idea how this would work on film since Billie Joe and Jamie look nothing alike. Unless, Johnny goes on some sort of psycho drug trip. Billie Joe is the singer/songwriter/lead guitarist of Green Day. He's basically the mastermind of American Idiot and perfect for the role of St.Jimmy.
Kaya Scodelario as Whatsername
Whatsername is Johnny's lover. Over time she sees Johnny spiral out of control and eventually gets tired of his behavior. While I haven't seen much of Kara's work, she seems to be able to pull off this kind of character.
Michelle Trachtenberg as Heather
Heather is Will's girlfriend, who finds out she's pregnant and forces Will to stay in his spot. She sees Will as a party goer and eventually decides to leave him. Michelle has played dramatic roles before. While she hasn't been in the public eye for years, this role could kick her back into stardom.
Alexandra Daddario as The Extraordinary Girl
The Extraordinary Girl is a Nurse who tends to Tunny's wounds after he fights in the war. Alexandra is an extraordinary actress who can pull off just about any role, while the character is minor she would have a huge impact on the film itself.
Overall, I think American Idiot would be a great film about growing up. Especially for teenage, suburban youth who struggle on a daily basis.
