So far, the first fifteen years of this century were pretty wild, with iconic(and some kinda overrated) franchises like Saw, Paranormal Activity and Final Destination being born in the early-to-mid-2000s. They have spawned multiple very successful (and sometimes very bad) sequels, which sky-rocketed to the top of the box office sales. Some are plain bad, watchable or good but sadly underrated... Let's see the top 5 best mainstream horror sequels from 2010 to now:
No. 5: Paranormal Activity 3(2011)
This third installment of the found-footage series that will finally f*ck off after this year's Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension(in 3D, scaaary!) is not bad. Not bad at all. But it's not good, either. In this prequel, we get to know the origin of Kate's possession, we spend some creepy time with Bloody Mary and we keep staring at the screen for five minutes after the film ends(witches? Uh, okay!). 2012's Paranormal Activity 4 wishes for an ending that was at least as ''good''(ugh...) as that. That might have saved it from being so boring.
No. 4: Insidious Chapter 2(2013)
After the unexpected plot twist at the end of part one, things go completely crazy. Going for more action than scares, Insidious 2 manages to stay at the same level of quality as the first film, without becoming too repetitive. The performances are good(Lin Shaye steals the show). To be honest, I thought this was just another overrated franchise a la Panaromal Activity, but trust me, it's not. So if you haven't watched these movies yet, please do it. I'm sure you'll enjoy them!
No. 3: Curse of Chucky(2013)
Thank God this movie happened. In my opinion, this is the best out of the current six. Chucky is scary again, after two dismal sequels, and more backstory about Charles Lee Ray is revealed. The kills are top-notch. The best parts about this slasher are the ending which gives us a surprise cameo, and the chilling chilli(no pun intended) scene that still haunts me to this day. A must-watch, for sure. Still waiting for news on Child's Play 7!
No. 2: Scream 4(2011)
Probably one of the most hated sequels on this list(why?!). I must say, Scream 4 is not great. But, it does a great job at being Scream 4. One of the killers' motive is frightening and actually worrying(''I don't need friends, I need fans!'') and we get one of the most violent death scenes of the series. The opening scene is ambitious, being easily the second best(nothing will ever top Drew Barrymore's performance in the 1996 original. Nada.) in this nowadays underrated self-aware franchise. My only real problem is the ending. Had it ended 15 minutes earlier, we would be in a totally different place right now. Heck, a new sequel would have happened already, most likely. But now that we have the TV show, I think part 4 is a really nice book-end, at least for now. However, SCREAM 5 seems likely now.
No. 1: Final Destination 5(2011)
Personally, my favorite sequel of the bloody series. Acting as a prequel(surprise!), it serves as a good final chapter. The opening scene is by far the most creative, while the ending is totally jaw-dropping. To put it this way, the only thing The Final Destination(2009) is worth thanking for is that we got part 5!
Do you agree with this list? Is one of your favorite horror sequels in it? Which ones do you think deserve a spot?
