Although 2010's "Shrek Forever After" was announced as being the last movie in the popular animated franchise, Dreamworks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg has hinted that a "Shrek 5" is still a possibility. It is also possible that Mike Myers is to return for the role.
Here's what Katzenberg previously teased:
"We like to let them have a little bit of time to rest. But I think you can be confident that we'll have another chapter in the 'Shrek' series. We're not finished, and more importantly, neither is he."
Even if "Shrek 5" never comes to be in production, Myers' ogre character may be returning to the big-screen anyway. Antonio Banderas revealed the following bombshell to Empire Online, regarding his upcoming "Shrek" spinoff/sequel "Puss in Boots 2: Nine Lives & 40 Thieves" coming in 2018:
"I heard some rumors that Shrek may be coming back. That would be great. Shrek doing a cameo... in MY movie? Uh, huh! Yeah, I'd like that."
Banderas also went on to explain the status of the sequel:
"They are restructuring the script now. We started... but that's the process. A lot of people participate in the creation of the script and the story and the narrative, everything. And they include you! They take you to California and you read the script with them, give them your ideas, and a couple of months later you see a new script where everything has been touched up."
"Puss in Boots 2: Nine Lives & 40 Thieves" is currently scheduled for a December 21st, 2018 released date. If a "Shrek 5" does happen, don't expect it until 2019 or 2020 at the earliest!
