After the success of Daredevil, Marvel's Netflix initiative is picking up steam. Today, Deadline is reporting that veteran actress Alfre Woodard has been cast in a major role for the upcoming Luke Cage series and is currently in the process of finalizing the deal.

According to the report, Woodard will be playing Minetta, a "powerful woman in local politics who will have an impact on Luke Cage’s life." But Deadline suspects that it may be a cover for Black Mariah, a nemesis for both Luke Cage and Iron Fist, which would work out well within the context and continuity of the Netflix side of the MCU.

Woodard is a fantastic actress and brings a lot to any role she's in, so to see her step into a villainous role and become an anchor for a Netflix show is only good news.

Mike Coulter has already been cast in the titular role of Luke Cage, and he'll be making his first appearance into the MCU alongside Krysten Ritter in this fall's Jessica Jones. It's nice to see that Marvel is quickly getting the ball rolling on the rest of these series, however. I wouldn't be surprised if we were to hear our first casting news about Iron Fist soon, too.
