Vin Diesel has dropped some awesome news for action fans today when he announced via Instagram that he will reprise his role as Xander Cage in the third installment of the xXx franchise.
Sharing the good news with his 10 million followers, the Furious 7 star posted a picture of himself looking sharply dressed in a suit, with the caption that confirmed not only his return, but the film's filming date and location:
While I was filming XXX, guys on set called me Air Diesel... The time to return has come. Filming starts December in the Philippines. #ILiveForThisShit
His hashtag of course refers to Xander Cage's famous line in the first xXx movie:
Diesel first took up the role of Xander Cage in 2002, appearing alongside Asia Argento and Samuel L. Jackson. Despite having mixed reviews, the film made $277 million at the world wide box office, and was followed by the 2005 sequel xXx: State of the Union. Diesel was unable to star in the sequel (due to his role in The Pacifier), so instead Ice Cube took up the main role as Darius Stone. Unfortunately, the follow up film was a box office bomb, making $71 million worldwide despite having a $113 million budget.
Despite the bad returns of xXx: State of the Union, it seems as though the studio thinks that the return of the original xXx and ultimate action man, Vin Diesel will have audiences lining up to see a xXx 3.
So far, details on the third xXx film are light, though it's rumored that the film will be called xXx: The Return of Xander Cage and focus on Xander Cage's return to action after being left for dead. No doubt in the coming months more and more announcements will be made, including a director, cast members and a release date, which we'll bring to you the moment they're released.
