In a recent interview with Vulture, Quentin Tarantino discussed his upcoming movie, The Hateful Eight, including the process to meet the deadline and how recent events might have affected his newest movie.
However, what really caught my eye was his response to the question, "Who do you see as your competition right now?" His response was perfect.
This might come across as egotistical, but I don’t really feel in competition with anybody anymore.
His reasoning is that he is "in competition with himself." He goes on to comically say that the last time he felt competition was with The Matrix: Reloaded, which was near the release of his film, Kill Bill.
Needless to say, he was very confident after watching The Matrix: Reloaded on day one.
Later on, he comments on the fact that he has not received an Oscar for directing, rather receiving two for writing. He said he was content with his Oscars, since only 5 others have received such an honor.
A little bit of modesty mixed in with narcissism, Tarantino only needs his own drive to continue making quality films, and he doesn't let anyone affect that. He has my utmost respect and admiration, and I can't wait for his future work. He doesn't hold back when it comes to his writing, and it comes to the point where some plot points might even be disturbing, like in Pulp Fiction, but that's a staple of his work. Hopefully, it won't be any different now.
