Now we've all seen Rocky, and if you thought this was going to be like that, then you were right. Though the roots of the movie are based in reality it is too much like Rocky III.
Don't get me wrong, Jake Gyllenhaal's performance was amazing.
A kid who grew up in the foster care system, beat all odds to become one of the greatest boxers ever known. Married a woman who also came up in the foster system and stood beside him the entire time.
Rachel McAdams gives a wonderful performance as Gyllenhaal's wife,
Maureen Hope, who stands by her man regardless of how she feels.
In a strange turn of events Billy hits rock bottom and turns to drugs and alcohol. Forest Whitaker portrays Tick Wills,
a retired boxer who helps Billy Hope get his life and career back on track.
Now if you feel like this sounds all too familiar, you're right. In Rocky III, Rocky hits rock bottom after his trainer and close friend Mickey Goldmill dies and relies on Apollo Creed (a fighter Rocky fought in the first 2 movies for the heavy weight champion title)
Now the only reason i give it an 8.5 is because the acting was superb. But i would expect nothing less from this list of actors.
This is so much like Rocky 3 even down to one boxer, who's desperate for his own shot at the Title, talks smack to Hope and then makes wisecracks about Hopes wife.
Whether you want to see this in theaters or not would be a matter of preference. Do you like underdog or boxing movies? If you really like them, then yeah, go see it, if you're just ok with them, then watch Rocky 3 and you'll get the gist of Southpaw.
To be frank, i'm surprised there's not a lawsuit of some sort for plagiarism or something going on.
