I don't know about the rest of you, but with just over a month to go until season 3 of Brooklyn Nine-Nine returns to our screens I'm getting pretty excited.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine was somewhat of a surprise hit when it premiered back in 2013. Created by Daniel J. Goor and Michael Schur, the buddy-cop sitcom stars The Lonely Island's Andy Samberg and a host of other Saturday Night Live alumni.
Season 2 left us with somewhat of a bittersweet taste; Andre Braugher's Captain Holt chose to allow himself to be transferred out of the Nine-Nine in order to protect his squad from rival Madeline Wuntch, and he was accompanied by his assistant and fan-favourite Gina (Chelsea Peretti).
Jake (Samberg) and Amy (Melissa Fumero) shared a kiss, after a season of build up and assuring each other that they didn't want to date, and before we even had time to process that it was time for the new Captain to arrive. Which is where the season left us.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine is one of those shows that actually has a lot of heart underneath the comedy, and season 2 chronicled this dynamic well. It strikes a refreshing cord; simultaneously funny and cute; uplifting and sad, without having too much pressure on personal drama. It's a very physical, situational comedy and most of the time it coasts along well on that; it chooses its dramatic moments well, making them all the more pertinent when they come.
So what do we know so far about season 3?
Though Goor has confirmed that Andre Braugher will not be leaving the cast, he is leaving his position as Captain of the Nine-Nine. Though we hold out hope that this change will not be permanent, his replacement has been named and he's pretty impressive. Gina will also continue to be present on the show, and it looks like fans are going to get to see her and Holt navigate a new world in the PR department.
Trainwreck and SNL star Bill Hader will be entering the precinct as the Nine-Nine's new captain. Not much is known about the particulars of this new character yet, all we know is that he's "efficient." Currently he's credited only as a guest star, with his IMDB page only giving away that he's appearing in the first episode of season 3.
As much as we loved Baugher's Captain Holt, if you're going to get someone to fill those shoes, it might as well be someone like Hader. It's unlikely that he'll be a permanent replacement though, so fingers crossed for Holt and Gina's return.
Archie Panjabi (of The Good Wife fame) will also be joining the cast as Lieutenant Knox. Appearing in the second episode, Panjabi's character will reportedly serve as a new love interest for Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio).
Despite their moments throughout the season 2 finale, it doesn't look like things are going to get much easier for Jake and Amy as season 3 opens. They've spent the whole of the series either denying or avoiding their feelings for each other, on the basis that dating as co-workers may end badly. Now they've kissed, during a time when emotions were running high, and Goor has mentioned that this will cause problems that they'll need to address as the season unfolds.
As two people with very different personalities their pairing was always a little off centre, but at the same time their characters have a great on-screen chemistry together. Whether that chemistry will spark into something more or remain as just a close friendship is something which is sure to be a central theme of the upcoming season.
Season 3 premiers September 27th 2015, so whilst you're waiting here's a hilarious Brooklyn Nine-Nine compilation for you.
