It's one of the big questions circulating the [Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice](tag:711870) film at the moment; will we see Green Lantern make an appearance?

Why Green Lantern?

There's a bunch of superheroes appearing in Batman v Superman, though some will only have small or cameo parts in order to set them up for solo projects and the upcoming Justice League films.

So far our superhero cast list is as follows:

  • Ben Affleck: Bruce Wayne / Batman
  • Henry Cavil: Clark Kent / Superman
  • Gal Gadot: Diana Prince / Wonder Woman
  • Ray Fisher: Victor Stone / Cyborg
  • Jason Momoa: Arthur Curry / Aquaman
  • Ezra Miller: Barry Allen / Flash

According to the New 52 comic book continuity (which the DC Movie Universe is following) this leaves us with just one founding member of the Justice League unaccounted for - Hal Jordan / Green Lantern.

Given that the events of Batman v Superman are going to be instrumental in setting up Justice League Part One (2017) and therefore the Justice League itself, it seems odd that there would be only one founding member excluded for the film.

With the announcement of the Green Lantern Corps film (not arriving till 2020 though!) we know that he's not being ignored, so what gives?

Carrie Farris could provide our link

Who the heck is Carrie Farris I hear you cry?

Major Carrie Farris appeared in Man of Steel, you may remember her from the scene in which she inexplicably loses the ability to function (despite the fact that she's a Major in the US army) cause oh-em-g Supes is just like so totally hawt gurl.

Christina Wren, who plays Farris, has herself made the connection between Carrie Farris and Carol Ferris from the comic books: major Green Lantern character, the superhero/villain Star Sapphire, and long time girlfriend of Hal Jordan.

"My character’s name is Carrie Farris; there’s a character named Carol [Ferris] who’s the Green Lantern’s girlfriend and turns into this superhero, Star Sapphire. But I have no idea if that’s the plan; they’re not even slated to do a Green Lantern film for several years."

Carol Ferris was head of Ferris Air, the company for which Hal Jordan worked as a test pilot. Sometime after Hal became the Lantern she was possessed by the Zamarons' (aliens) Star Sapphire crystal, which gave her powers similar to that of Green Lantern just, you know, eviler.

She functioned as a supervillian for a while, fighting with Green Lantern on a regular basis, not knowing that he was her love Hal Jordan. Eventually she got over the whole evil thing and became a superhero, Star Sapphire.

So, though she might not be a direct connection to Green Lantern at this time, she certainly provides us with a link between Superman and Green Lantern.

What does this tell us about Green Lantern then?

I know, I know, nothing has been confirmed so far and everything else is just speculation, but Green Lantern is a popular character and a huge part of the Justice League; excluding him from Batman v Superman wouldn't make any sense unless he's due to appear in another DC movie sometime soon. Even if he's just featured in a cameo or an end credits scene, I'll be hugely surprised if we don't see any Green Lantern at all.

In a slight ray of hope, we have Bailey Chase, Scoot McNairy and Callan Mulvey all signed up to play mystery roles in Batman v Superman, so there's every possibility that one of them could be our Green Lantern.

Personally I think DC are playing the cards so close to their chest for a reason, I think they might be saving up for a big reveal regarding the character, probably something connected to the 2020 Green Lantern Corps film. (Either that or they're still reeling from the reviews of the 2011 film...)
