It's not easy to shock audiences when you're adapting a popular book series. And while so far The Hunger Games Franchise has stayed pretty true to the novels, with some minor omissions, [The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2](tag:449866) could change all that. Recently the actors have been hinting at a shocking twist in the upcoming film, implying that the Hunger Games will finally break from the book canon and surprise fans everywhere!
Josh Hutcherson is eager for us to see the epic finale to the movie series.
"I know the story, and it goes out with a bang. It's a really powerful story with great character arcs and they all kind of have their resolutions in this one, and I can't wait for people to see it."
But what could these shocking revelations be? All we have is wild speculation at this point, but the sky's the limit for Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2!
Katniss Could Die!
Killing off your protagonist is one way to end the story "with a bang", but how likely is it?
Case for: in the final showdown, when the war is won, it's Katniss v Coin v Snow. In the books Katniss demanded that Coin let her kill Snow, though the films left this part out. Her relationship with Coin is also very antagonistic in the book, whereas the film has them be on fairly good terms. So when Katniss is ordered by Coin to kill Snow (in the book), Katniss turns around and shoots Coin instead!
Ok, but what does this have to do with Katniss dying?
The theory goes that because the film dynamic has already changed for the final showdown, Katniss will be the one to die, killed by Snow or Coin. She also might be executed after killing Coin: in the books she was put on trial for the assasination, but she didn't bother to show up. Or something totally different might lead to her death.
Is it likely? Maybe. If they're going for shock value, killing Katniss is the best way to go.
The Capitol Could Win!
Ah, the Capitol. Home of whacky fashion trends and good old fashioned oppression. With their sense of entitlement and penchant for killing children (or letting children kill each other), what's not to love?
Case for: of course, Katniss' resistance wins in the books, but hey, sometimes a tragedy is the best way to end a series! Plus it would give plenty of opportunities for spinoff movies and possible TV series, which Lionsgate are officially considering. Could we see the 77th Hunger Games after Mockingjay Part 2?
Is it likely? not really. Having the bad guys win would be a very depressing way to end a franchise, though it would be great shock value. But that doesn't mean it's the end of the Hunger Games themselves...
Rebellion Endorsed Arena
Get this - the Rebellion wins, establishes a new government, fulfilling the hopes and dreams of millions of people. BUT what if President Coin makes the decision to start up the Hunger Games again, continuing the cycle of bloodthirsty killing games.
Case for: uh, Coin ACTUALLY WANTS THIS to happen. In the books, she declares that the Hunger Games will continue, but only for Capitol children. Harsh! This mirrors the backstory of the previous administration, which put the Hunger Games in place to punish the districts for, you guessed it, rising against the Capitol. Poetic justice? Maybe.
Of course, Katniss wants to put a stop to this, which is why she assassinates Coin. But who's to say the idea dies with her? She must have had supporters, after all. A few years on, once Katniss has resumed normal life, maybe the Hunger Games will start again under the new government. Not the resistance's Mockingjay any more, how could Katniss hope to stop it?
Is it likely? It's possible! This has shock value, sequel story potential, AND it makes sense with the plot of the books.
So there you have it, folks!
How the Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 can keep the story fresh and shock audiences everywhere! But what crazy twist would you write into the film? Let us know in the comments, or write your own post!
