Daredevil season 1 wrapped up very nicely, but there are still plenty of unanswered questions to be explored in season 2, as well as lots of relationship development yet to come. After all, Matt's identity is still a mystery to Karen Page, and there's lots of her dark secrets yet to be revealed. What will happen when Matt finds out that Karen killed Wesley Snipes? And how will Karen react to the fact that her best friends are lying to her?
With so much we don't know about Karen, it's hard to predict how all this will unfold. As Matt's longest running love comic book interest, it's possible we'll have a romance on the horizon. And with plenty of backstory hints, Daredevil season 2 is set to answer the question: just who is Karen Page?
Two Sides Of The Same Coin
Matt and Karen's story is poignant and full of dramatic irony. Despite the similarities in their characters and storyline, they both view each other as an opposite. For Deborah Ann Woll, this means that Karen is sure if Matt discovered her secrets, he'd never be her friend again.
"It's this idea that maybe we could move on, maybe the past could just be the past ... but it's tinged by that darkness, tinged by that idea that he can never know me because he would hate the person that I am. And I love that idea. That for Karen, she's someone who doesn't love herself, so how could anyone else love her?"
It's tragic really, that Matt and Karen don't realise that they're taking parallel journeys in season 1, as they plunge headfirst into a web of conspiracy because they're so determined to do what's right. It's uncertain that whether learning Matt's secret will strengthen their relationship or plunge Karen into depression as she discovers her only friends have been lying to her.
However, Deborah Ann Woll seems to think that learning Matt's true identity might be the best thing for their friendship... and maybe something more.
Woll revealed that for Karen, Matt often "doesn't go far enough", obeying the boundaries of law and order when she thinks justice requires someone to go beyond those rules. Daredevil, on the other hand, is someone she respects for his heroism, while being attracted to his dark side. Woll points out the similarities between Karen's anger and Daredevil's methods.
"I think that there's a part of her that if she could break some bones of people who are doing horrendous things, she would do it .There might be a part of her that says, 'Well, I shouldn't like someone who does that.' But I think if she were really honest with herself, that would be something she'd be quite attracted to."
This is quite heartening: maybe instead of causing a schism in the group, learning Matt's secret identity will actually lead to a romance between him and Karen! Unless Karen's own dark secrets are just too much for Matt...
Who Is Karen Page?
Karen has been an enigma since her first appearance in Daredevil season 1, and despite being one of the central characters, the more we learn about her the more her mystery deepens. Who could forget her fantastic showdown against Wesley, where she shocked all of us by shooting him not once but eight times, after implying that she's done this before.
Although Karen seems like an innocent flower, she's definitely survived some very tough times. She occasionally alludes to the struggles of her past to Ben Urich, who seems to have discovered her secrets after investigating her. Whatever happened before we knew Karen is enough for her to fear that people would never believe her stories.
But what exactly happened to her? We know it might have something to do with her parents, from how she's mentioned that they don't get along. And she's definitely been under someone's thumb before. Could this have something to do with comic Karen's villain father?
Daredevil season 2 is going to deal with Karen's backstory, but according to Woll her past doesn't necessarily match up with the comic books. This might be the best thing for Karen though. Woll feels like we're getting an inverse of comic Karen's plot in Daredevil: instead of the innocent girl being corrupted, this Karen's story is one of survival.
"This isn't a perfect girl ruined by the world. This is a woman who's been through a lot and she's survived and keeps pushing forward. And I like the idea that we're seeing her 'after' maybe for the extreme experiences."
For Woll, Karen is very much the hero of her own story. Just like Matt's vigilante life has its dangers, Karen's investigations don't make her a damsel in distress, but a hero who takes risks.
Will Daredevil season 2 find Matt and Karen taking solace in each other, as two people just trying to do what's right? We'll have to wait until next year to find out, but if Woll's revelations are anything to go by, season 2 is going to be a wild ride for Karen!
