If you're a fan like myself, you are fully aware of Ash vs. Evil Dead premiering on Starz this October. We know a few things already. The show will star the one and only, Bruce Campbell. It is executively produced by Campbell, Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert, who originally produced the first film. The pilot episode is directed by Raimi, and it serves as a sequel to the original films. But as a fan, there are a few things I want the show to take from the films.
Now, Evil Dead is no stranger to blood and viscera. Some might say it's just as big a part of Evil Dead as Campbell himself. But with a television show, just how gory can it be? Luckily, judging by this interview with Campbell, we can expect the show to be as bloody as we can hope for. That's good. The bloodier, the better!
The Evil Dead was strictly horror, but the sequels (Evil Dead 2/Army of Darkness) are horror/comedy, with the latter being mostly comedy. That is the charm of these films. They can scare the pants off of you as well as split your sides with laughter. That is an aspect of the films I hope transfers to television easily. If the trailers are any idea of what we can expect, then I think we'll be in for a treat. [trailer 1] [trailer 2]
3. One Liners
"Hail to the King, baby!" Ash Williams is known for his smart-ass attitude and one liners. If the show hopes to capture the gift that was Bruce Campbell's performance in the original films, then they will need to give him plenty to say and with a snarky tone. Seeing that Campbell is no stranger to hilarious dialogue, I don't think we'll have much to worry about. But with a show setting, dialogue will be a heavy part of each episode. Let's hope the writers keep the dialogue important and with meaning, and not interrupting the action. Groovy!
Fight scenes are some of the best parts of The Evil Dead series. From the gore to the choreography, it's always great! Nothing can top the scene from Evil Dead 2 where Ash gets into a fight with his own hand! Hopefully the show won't have too much time spent walking around without a good chainsaw fight or shotgun blast to the face of the hordes of the deadites. And the deadites are an important part. From what I've seen in the trailers (links above) we can expect to see plenty of traditional deadites and more creative monsters awakened from their ancient slumber.
5. MORE EVIL DEAD
Now, you might be confused by that point. How can we have more Evil Dead with the show not even out yet? Well, let me explain: I want this show to explode ratings. Take old fans and geek them out and make new fans along the way. I want there to be a second season -- or if all goes well, a new movie! The 2013 remake added as nice teaser at the end of the credits, with Ash saying one of his famous lines. If you're like me, after you saw that it raised many questions as to whether there was to be more Ash in the future. Luckily, we got our answer: The show holds so much promise and with every image and clip released I get more excited. Still, I'd love to see Ash on the big screen one more time.
Well, there you have it. Just a few of the things I hope we can expect from Ash vs. Evil Dead. What are your thoughts on the show? Are you excited? What else do you hope we can expect? Let me know in the comments.
Ash vs. Evil Dead will premiere Saturday, Oct. 31 at 9 p.m. ET on Starz.
