Think back to the Halloweens of your childhood. What are the first few films that come to mind? Probably films along the lines of Halloween (makes sense), The Nightmare Before Christmas, Hocus Pocus... ahhh, the memories!
But there's a certain film that makes its way to Disney Channel every year, and it floods you with nostalgia and the unyielding desire to buy yourself a purple broomstick...
Everyone remembers the story of Marnie Piper (Kimberly J. Brown) and her family making their way to Halloweentown with the help of their witchy grandmother Agatha (Debbie Reynolds). When the townspeople begin disappearing because of a power-hungry Mayor taking over the town, it's up to the Cromwell clan to stop him.
Halloweentown left me with some morals that have totally changed my life, a few being:
"Being normal is vastly overrated." - Agatha Cromwell
And in relation to the previous (be who you are!!): "But I'm a witch - I can't just not be." - Marnie Piper
Now that your childhood memories have manifested themselves and completely taken over your senses, be prepared to be amazed.
You can now go visit Halloweentown yourself!
St. Helen's, Oregon's (40 minutes outside Portland) best-kept secret is their Halloween spirit. For years, 'Spirit of Halloweentown' has been a quiet event that comes around every October - until this year, as the information about an actual Halloweentown has made its way around, too...
Fun fact: Halloweentown was filmed in Oregon, and the town loved the setup so much that every year they recreate it for everyone to visit!
Remember that picture up top? Just check out how cool this side-by-side is!
The town sets up an entire replication of the set used in the film, complete with photo-ops, tours, and costume contests that your inner child can be a part of every weekend in October. Storefronts participate in a scarecrow building contest, and they even have what they call a 'Hot-Rod and Hearse' contest. Whichever spooky neighbor has the coolest/creepiest hot-rod and/or hearse wins a prize, obvs!
Sadly, you cannot buy a broom that actually flies, but you may meet a goblin that captures your heart!
If that's not enough for you, to kick off the festivities, the city has the lighting of the 'Great Pumpkin,' seen in the above photo. From there, there's no stopping the Halloween spirit from making its way into your heart!
You can keep track of updates and finalizations of the events via their Facebook page.
I know I'm going to try to make it out to Oregon for the festivities...what about you?
