There have been a lot of theories and rumors going around about what we might see in [Captain America: Civil War](tag:994409). In my opinion, one huge fact has been completely overlooked. Martin Freeman has been cast in the movie and we have absolutely no info on what role he is playing. After starring in the Hobbit movies, Freeman is now a huge name. Some fans have theorized he'll play some sort of government official, but such a small role seems odd for such a big name actor. To cast an actor of this caliber and then not utilize him to the fullest of his abilities would be a waste of incredible talent. If Freeman was playing some small role, why then would it be so secretive? There's a simple answer to that really.
Martin Freeman is the Red Skull
Hold on a moment, I thought Hugo Weaving was the Red Skull? Well you'd be correct, he totally is. However, Johann Schmidt isn't the only person to don the look, in fact in the Captain America comics that takes place during Civil War, the Red Skull plays a large role. This role however, isn't done through the ex-Nazi, but rather through a shared mind with business mogul Aleksander Lukin.
Who is Aleksander Lukin?
Within the comic book universe, Aleksander Lukin is the CEO of Kronos Corporation, a leading international company that makes millions every year. After the Red Skull has seemingly died, he melds his mind with that of Aleksander Lukin and is able to live on as the Red Skull, albeit quite vicariously.
How Does He Fit Into the MCU?
We've seen Roxxon Oil Company time and time again, however, every time we see them they're losing lots of money. It's appeared in Agents of SHIELD, Iron Man 2, Iron Man 3, and Agent Carter. Throughout Agent Carter it is apparent that Roxxon has no morals or ethical business practices. However, with the events that take place in the Iron Man movies and Agents of Shield, Roxxon has presumably lost millions in damages. If they go under, then someone will need to buy the huge oil company. This would be a great way to bring in Lukin (who will buy the company just as he did in the comics) and bring back the Red Skull.
Why Martin Freeman Makes Sense
If Marvel is secretly planning on bringing the Red Skull back, they'd have to have a high profile actor in the role in order to bring the crazed CEO/Nazi to life. Further evidence to this theory is what Marvel Producer Kevin Feige said about Freeman's addition to the cast:
From his roles as Bilbo Baggins and Doctor Watson to Tim in 'The Office,' Martin's range from the dramatic to the comedic has consistently impressed us," said "Captain America: Civil War" Producer Kevin Feige. "We couldn't be more honored or excited to have such a talented actor join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The important part to take note here is Feige's praise of Freeman's range from dramatic to comedic. In order to play Lukin, Freeman has to be able to portray a mad man, going from his own Lukin mind to that of the villainous Red Skull. If this theory proves to be true then it would explain why Marvel is keeping Martin Freeman's role under wraps.
There has to be a reason we haven't heard a single whisper as to who Martin Freeman is playing. If it was a low level character, then there's no real reason to be so secretive. However, if Freeman is, in fact, playing Lukin it could spell utter doom for one of our favorite characters (click here for more about that!)
