(Warning - very mild potential SPOILERS for future MCU movies, and past Marvel comic books, lie below. As Taylor Swift so wisely said: "Don't say I didn't say I didn't warn ya...")
Now, what with the recent revelation of which team the heroes of Captain America: Civil War will each be on, it's perhaps not too surprising that the subject of Cap and Iron Man-related loyalty should be in the thoughts of many fans at the moment. After all, when it comes to Civil War, which side you're on - or would be on - matters.
One of the biggest questions to emerge from the debate surrounding the two sides' announcement, though, was actually one that we can only answer with speculation. Specifically:
Which Side Would the MCU Heroes Who Aren't Set to Appear in Captain America: Civil War Be On?
After all, despite the movie seeming set to feature pretty much every hero there's ever been, there are actually a fair few Marvel heroes who aren't currently cued up to appear. Let's take a look, then, at just which side seven of the more established heroes would likely be on when it comes down to the ultimate Captain America/Iron Man smackdown.
Now, over the past two Avengers movies, the God of Thunder hasn't exactly become bosom buddies with either Cap or Iron Man, with the MCU's central trio instead being more 'co-workers who get along' than 'best friends for life.'
With that in mind, it's probably a toss up between Thor's respect for authority causing him to back Iron Man, and his respect for the inherent nobility of heroes causing him to side with Cap.
So, Which Side Would He Be On? It's a tough one, but of the two, Cap clearly makes a better drinking companion, so he probably has the edge on this one. Team Cap, by a sip.
6. The Incredible Hulk
Science Bros for Life, Bruce 'Hulk' Banner and Tony 'Iron Man' Stark would in some ways seem the most obvious teammates going - if it weren't for Tony's bad habit of dragging Bruce into situations he'd rather no be in, like accidentally inventing a potentially world-destroying A.I.
As it is, Bruce has good reason to trust Tony about as far as he can throw him (in non-Hulk form), so the whole thing is a little bit muddy - especially since there's a good chance that The Hulk'd be public enemy number one in the government's eyes.
So, Which Side Would He Be On? Odds are Bruce'd stay neutral as long as he could, but when it came down to it, he'd likely be the one to force Tony to see that what he was doing was wrong. Team Cap, then (grudgingly).
5. Nick Fury
Now, Nick Fury has made a career out of being completely inscrutable, and playing any and every side (and colleague) against one another whenever it suits his goals.
Underneath that, though, lies a man who has ultimately given over his life to harnessing superheroes in the direction of doing good via their governments. If push came to shove, not even his loyalty to Cap would necessarily turn him against the side of authority.
So, Which Side Would He Be On? It's a tough call, but he could well be Team Iron Man. Not that you'd necessarily be able to tell...
4. Maria Hill
A combination of a slightly fraught relationship with Cap - there tends to be a whole lot of snarky banter between the two of them - and a deep-lying loyalty to S.H.I.E.L.D. makes Maria Hill an obvious candidate to lead the government's efforts on Iron Man's side.
The fact that she took on pretty much exactly that role in the comic book Civil War is just gravy...
So, Which Side Would She Be On? Team Iron Man, but there's a pretty good chance she'd be playing a Nick Fury-like long game, too.
3. Hank Pym
Hank Pym doesn't trust Tony Stark, S.H.I.E.L.D, any government, or any kind of authority in general.
This one's not even a tough one.
So, Which Side Would He Be On? Team Cap, waving pom poms and a banner on the sideline while making smart-ass comments about Cap's gaudy suit.
2. The Wasp
Arguably one of the tougher calls, Hope Van Dyne may not be set to become The Wasp until after Captain America: Civil War, but which side she'd have ended up on isn't made any clearer for that.
On the one hand, she shares her father's distaste for authority, and mistrust of charismatic CEOs with big plans. On the other, she's more of a natural rule-follower than rebel (and really likes winding her dad up).
So, Which Side Would She Be On? Team Cap, but there's no guarantee she'd have started out there.
And, finally, of course:
1. The Guardians of the Galaxy
Now, the chances of the Guardians ending up embroiled in the on-screen Civil War are about as high as mine are, but if so, it wouldn't be likely to be on Iron Man's side.
After all, that whole 'something good, something bad, little bit of both' routine works a whole lot better when you're not working for the government...
So, Which Side Would They Be On? Team Themselves, most likely, but if it came down to it, you get the feeling they'd have Cap's back.
Team Cap Very Much Wins
After all, Thor, The Hulk, The Wasp and the wily Hank Pym are all but certain to trump Nick Fury and Maria Hill any day of the week. Even with the Guardians of the Galaxy abstaining, then, it's a solid set of reinforcements.
Maybe Chris Evans should get on the phone to Hemsworth and Ruffalo...
