In 2012, Kel Mitchell gave an interview with TMZ and shattered hearts around America and beyond when he revealed that a Kenan & Kel reunion is absolutely not on the cards. The '90s show, which featured the lovable duo mostly getting into unquantifiable amounts of trouble and forming unhealthy relationships with 2 liter bottles of orange soda, ended 15 years ago and the co-stars have since gone their separate ways.
After starring in a million different Nickelodeon productions throughout the nineties, such as Two Heads Are Better Than None, All That and Good Burger, ties were supposedly torn when the duo both auditioned for a position on Saturday Night Live and only one man got the part.
When Kenan scored the role over Kel, rumors soared around the internet and assumptions were made that there was a huge feud between the childhood co-stars, with Kel being supposedly being butt-hurt that SNL didn't pick him and Kenan apparently 'hating' his rejected friend. The rumors broke our tiny little hearts, but was any of this true?
Talking to TMZ, Kel Mitchell said that Kenan is desperately trying to distance himself from any Kenan & Kel connection that still stands and that he is the reason a TV reunion has not happened:
“The truth is, Kenan does not want to be seen with me in any form of media, or even have my name mentioned around him.”
"I know the fans love the show and would love to see some type of appearance with us … I just don’t see that ever happening because of how he really feels.”
Welp! However, as far as Kel is concerned, there is no bad blood and he's definitely not bitter:
“I have not been upset about this. I respect his choice of wanting to make a name for himself solo.
There is no bad blood on my side."
The Orange Soda loving star seemingly truly holds no grudges as he's openly talked and laughed about his SNL auditions, which I doubt he would do if he'd taken the rejection to heart.
"...I think it's hilarious now thinking about it, but now doing standup and being good at it now, I realize now what I did was not good. But basically I did this joke about DMX - if DMX was in Toy Story. It was so bad, it was good to me. And I remember Tina Fey was there, and I remember afterwards she was like "Good job!" but I think it was a little too crazy for SNL."
"I did a song about Michael Jackson if he was allergic to trees! Because, you know, he used to love to sit in trees, if you saw that classic interview that he had, and I thought it would be funny if he was allergic to trees and he's sitting in one sneezing! So I remember I starting dancing, I think my energy was so crazy, I did like a moonwalk move and actually stepped on one of the tables right in front of the stage, and flipped the table with someone's drink on it over, it was a MESS!"
In addition to that, in a Reddit 'Ask Me Anything' session, one Redditer asked whether Kel was still in touch with Kenan and this was his response:
So, although a TV reunion is exceedingly unlikely, we seem to be able to conclude that the whole 'feud' was created out out of an internet thirst for drama. What a surprise. Kenan Thompson hasn't added fuel to the fire, but this sounds like a case of purely not wanting to be typecast and overshadowed by a show that he starred in when he was 18, which is totally understandable.
While it would be great to see them hanging out, gnawing a Good Burger or two and loving one another again, as things remain quiet over at camp Kenan, I wouldn't hold your breath... Maybe he's still pissed that Kel dropped the screw in the tuna, what do you think?
