For a long time Hollywood was behind on the times with cinematic nudity, compared to our European counterparts, at least. But as of late, we've become much more relaxed when it comes to censorship and getting used to seeing some actors go onscreen in the buff (I see you, Game of Thrones).

Although nudity is far from shocking these days, these 19 celebrities (in no particular order) surprised us all by how unabashed they were when it came to stripping down in front of the camera:

1. Julie Andrews

The movie: S.O.B. (1981)

2. Richard Gere

The movie: American Gigolo (1980)

3. Elizabeth Olsen

The movie: Oldboy (2013)

4. Helen Mirren

The movie: The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone (2003)

5. Kristen Wiig

The movie: Welcome to Me (2015)

6. Anne Hathaway

The movies: Brokeback Mountain (2005), Love and Other Drugs (2010)

7. Katie Holmes

The movie: The Gift (2000)

8. Natalie Portman

The movie: Hotel Chevalier (2007)

9. Viggo Mortensen

The movie: Eastern Promises (2007)

10. Reese Witherspoon

The movie: Twilight (1998) No, not that Twilight.

11. Daniel Radcliffe

The play: Equus (2007)

12. Heather Matarazzo

The movie: Hostel: Part 2 (2007)

13. Harvey Keitel

The movies: Bad Lieutenant (1992), The Piano (1993)

14. Kathy Bates

The movie: About Schmidt (2002)

15. Bruce Willis

The movie: Color of Night (1994)

16. Carey Mulligan

The movies: And When Did You Last See Your Father? (2007), Shame (2011)

17. Geoffrey Rush

The movie: Shine (1996), Quills (2000)

18. Jessica Tandy

The movie: Camilla (1994)

19. Jason Segel

The movie: Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)

Granted, Jason Segel's nudity has since become one of the most famous (and therefore, least surprising) nude scenes in a movie. But sitting in the theater in 2008, I had no idea we'd be seeing some male full-frontal!

When it comes to being dedicated to your craft, few people do it better than those actors and actresses who aren't afraid to flaunt what their mammas and papas gave them for the sake of creative expression. So thanks to these people who were brave enough to bare it all in the name of art!
