Despite [Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens](tag:711158) not yet being released, it looks as though Disney and LucasFilm are already preparing to cast roles in the next Star Wars film, Rian Johnson's Star Wars: Episode VIII!

The Wrap has reported that a shortlist of possible actresses for the lead female role has been compiled, with auditions to come in the near future. Included on the list of possible actresses are Olivia Cook (Bates Motel), Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) and Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin). Interestingly Tatiana Maslany was also shortlisted to play the lead role in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, though Felicity Jones ultimately landed the part.

The three are thought to be scheduled to do a screen test with Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens star John Boyega before the end of the month. Meanwhile, it also looks as though Benicio del Toro is nearing a deal to play the villain in Episode VIII. Unfortunately for fans at this stage, plot details for the film are unknown, though the internet has been rife with speculation that Han Solo's daughter could be introduced, and with this latest news of a young female lead being cast, perhaps the folks of the net are correct.

Star Wars: Episode VIII will be released May 26th, 2017, though thankfully we have Star Wars: Episode ViI - The Force Awakens to look forward to this year when it is released on December 18, 2015.
