Thanks to PAX 2015, we were lucky enough to receive more footage of Final Fantasy 15. We were also informed that the release date of the game would not be unveiled until March 2016. Yep, we now have am announcement period for the announcement of the announcement of the Final Fantasy 15 release date. It's just about as crazy as the game looks!
But all across the Final Fantasy community, fans have taken a look at what Square Enix are creating for 2016 and analysing its potential. This game has undergone massive developments throughout the last few years - it even started off as a different game; it was originally announced in 2006 as Final Fantasy Versus XIII. But probably one of the most impactful developments was the changing of director from Tetsuya Nomura to Hajime Tabata.
Final Fantasy 15: the Vision of Hajime Tabata vs That of Tetsuya Nomura!
It was actually just around this time last year that we heard that Square Enix had changed directors for Final Fantasy 15. Tetsuya Nomura had been working on the game for quite some times, and after his departure, two questions came to the minds of the gaming community. One: why did he step down as director? Two: will the direction he took on the universe be followed?
“Whoa there, we are still following his direction on the universe, characters etc. so his vision plays a very big role in FFXV. He was never kicked out, in fact far from it. He has to pay full attention to Kingdom Hearts 3, another game that is in dire need for release, so the company has left the rest of the production of FFXV to my director Tabata-san.” - Statement from a Square Enix representative
So what effects have his departure had on Final Fantasy 15? After all, if he left in September 2014, and Final Fantasy 15 doesn't get a release date till late next year, Hajime Tabata will have been in directorial control for over two years. This is no small amount of time to impact on a game, especially in the later stages of production. But some fans have taken a look at Final Fantasy 15 and aren't happy. They claim that the title has suffered from the departure of Nomura and that the dark intent that the Kingdom Hearts director had started out with has been removed. However, that doesn't seem very fair.
All of the groundwork was laid by Nomura. He had a vision for a journey of friends, friends who would encounter dark powers on their travels. Everything that he contributed to the game will remain. Tabata was the man who would ensure the game would actually be completed. He fleshed out the ideas that Nomura had sewn and will play a huge role in the design of the game.
Perhaps there will be sections of the game that will play out differently were Nomura in charge, but saying that the game won't be as dark doesn't exactly seem accurate. Besides, Tabata is a wonderfully communicative director. He is constantly in touch with the fan base and showing off new aspects of the game. There will certainly be moments and sights in Final Fantasy 15 that will belong to him, but the story and structure of it belongs to Nomura.
Who Would You Have Preferred to Direct Final Fantasy 15 Up to its Release Date?
Where do you stand in this regard? Do you wish that Tetsuya Nomura had stayed on as director of Final Fantasy 15 up until the end? Or do you think he should focus on making Kingdom Hearts 3 the best it can be? Do you like the work of Hajime Tabata? Or would you have picked someone else entirely?
Tabata has assuredly made a huge impact on Final Fantasy 15, he is the man that will bring the game together after all. He'll control the pace of the game. But the story and setting goes to Nomura, he helped mould the base of this highly anticipated title.
