We as Americans are obsessed with celebrities and celebrity gossip alike. It has all been infused within our culture. It sparks conversation and most celebrities are constantly within the public eye. We as media writers are always looking for next big controversy to write about. With this generation's (2000 and on) advancements in technology and social media, anytime a celebrity does something relatively questionable it blows up on either Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram. The social media trend has shone light on many controversial celebrities but there is 5 in particular that stand out the most.

5. Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber is a singer that you really want to like but he just keeps doing things that make you question his thinking. Rising to fame with his mash hit "Baby", Bieber instantly became a worldwide sensation, especially among younger girls. As he grew older and the money and fame began to overwhelm the young superstar his controversies became endless. Pictures of him smoking a little marijuana started to surface around the internet and his reputation began to take a hit. Accused multiple times of reckless driving, Bieber was eventually arrested on suspicion of DUI. Bieber also ran into some trouble with the law when his neighbor accused him of egging his house and causing thousands of dollars in damage. There was even a video of him that surfaced which depicted him urinating into a mop bucket in a restaurant. Fortunately, today Bieber seems to have turned a new leaf and gained a new found level of maturity. Gaining much respect during his Comedy Central Roast and apologizing for his past, I wish him the best of luck.

4. Kanye West

I AM A GOD! Ahhh yes, the self proclaimed "God" amongst men Kanye West, AKA Yeezus, is definitely one of the most controversial personalities of this generation. I must admit, Kanye West's music catalog is in my opinion one of the greatest of all time and I am a huge fan of his music. His story of how he came to be one of Hip-hop's leading men from a producer where everyone doubted him is truly inspirational. Since his rise to fame Kanye has said and done some very controversial things. Starting with his proclamation that George Bush hates African-Americans, proclaiming himself a literal god, and the crown jewel of his controversial actions: his interruption of Taylor Swift's VMA Speech. His statement that Beyonce had "The greatest video of all time" has become subject to countless internet parody's and is one of the most memorable events of recent memory.

3. Britney Spears

Britney Spears was at one time arguably one of the most sensational Pop singers of all time. The Queen of bubble gum pop, Britney Spears in the mid 2000s was easily the most talked about and most controversial star at the time. In 2004 she became engaged to dancer Kevin Federline and that is when Spears became subject to intense media attention and criticism. She had multiple short lasting stays within rehabilitation programs where most of the time she would only stay for a few days. Her Aunt, who she was very close with, unfortunately passed away from ovarian cancer which led Britney to do the thing that set the world on fire. Spears shaved her head with a pair of electric clippers and everyone lost it! Britney Spears is the poster child for a superstar who was on top of the world and hit rock bottom. But, all who fall can get back up and Britney Spears has redeemed herself and is on the right track as of today!

2. Kim Kardashian

Is there a more mesmerizing celebrity in the world today than Kim Kardashian? Kim K, who happens to be Kanye West's wife (4th on the list), is always doing something to keep her and her family's name relevant. She made her claim to fame in 2003 when a sextape was released including herself and her then boyfriend Ray-J. Since then, she has become the most recognizable reality TV star in the world and also the highest paid. Kim K has broken the internet multiple times with pictures exhibiting her bodily assets and does not shy away from flaunting it. Most of Kardashian's controversy has come from the way she has made her fame and built her empire. Many claim that she has no talent and is only famous because of her body. While they may be right, one can not argue Kim K is a master of media relations and is now one of the wealthiest women in the country.

1. Miley Cyrus

Is there a celebrity today that can generate the amount of controversy that Miley Cyrus can? I don't think that there is. Rising to fame with her role as Hannah Montana in the Disney Channel show of the same name, the world was not ready for her transition away from that Disney persona. When she began to smoke cigarettes and get tattoos the world lost it but little did they know what Miley was truly capable of. With the release of her hit music video for "We Can't Stop" it was clear that Hannah Montana was no more. Becoming more comfortable with her sexuality and her body, Miley began to appeal to a very adult oriented audience. Her performance at the 2013 VMA awards with Robin Thicke cemented her status as one of the most outlandish superstars ofthe modern age. And just recently while actually hosting the 2015 VMAs the beef between Miley and rap superstar Nicki Minaj became public when Minaj called her out while accepting her award. All the controversy aside, Miley is a very strong advocate for the LGBT community and a ambassador for teen homelessness. Miley is actually a very giving person but is definitely a bit wild!
