I gotta say, this Halo 5 cinematic opening wasn't exactly indicative of traditional Halo, however it was unbelievably cool. After Fireteam Osiris drop from their UNSC ship, the opening continues in one incredible shot. It shows the various abilities the different spartans will be able to use, the hordes of Covenant and Promethean enemies we'll be expected to take down and the chaos that various colonies are being subjected to.
The opening doesn't give us much information about the upcoming game, though perhaps it shows some kind of gameplay or narrative aspects that we can expect. Let's take a look at Halo 5 Guardian's opening cinematic and analyse the bits of information it gave us!
An Analysis of the Halo 5 Guardians Cinematic Opening!
The opening sees Fireteam Osiris receiving a broadcast from Infinity commanders. They're informed of an attack on a colony on Kamchata - they were also contacted by Dr. Catherine Elizabeth Halsey who informed them of her insider knowledge about the attack. As far as Infinity are aware she is under Covenant custody and somehow managing to contact them. However, Halo 4: Spartan Ops shows that she has something to gain from helping The Covenant.
Whether she is notifying them to lead them into a trap or not is unclear, though it seems highly likely. In any case, Osiris are informed of the fact that she is present on this site with Covenant Supreme Leader Jul 'Mdama. Their mission is to retrieve Halsey and take out the leader if the opportunity arises. After this moment we receive some friendly banter and then they're on their way!
By the way, I don't know about you guys, but seeing one white male in this team is such a breath of fresh air. And one thing about this team is certain - they can kick some serious ass. The remainder of this opening is a barrage of insane combat. My personal favourite moment is when they make contact with the sand dunes and begin gliding down the hillside. It's all so ridiculous and nowhere near indicative of what we'll be able to accomplish in the game - but still cool!
We see the various abilities that the spartans possess, such as their jet boosters, their epic ground slams, forceful sprinting and we even see one of the spartans smash through a rock. I highly doubt this points to destructible objects but it could mean we have a kind of force punch in Halo 5. In terms of the Covenant and Prometheans all of their standard weaponry, abilities, and classes are intact. The Jackals energy shields look a bit different and their are certain amour upgrades visible but that's about it!
The question is whether the game picks up from here. Are we going to be thrust into the middle of this battle on Kamchata? Will we suddenly take control of Spartan Locke as we make our way down the hill? Or are we just going to see a more subdued cinematic that will take us to a base for us to fight through? To be honest, I bet it's the latter.
I'd love to have us start off by sliding down the side of this mountain, but I can't really see that happening. I think moments of this level of epicness will be reserved for cinematics. But I could be proven wrong. I just hope that 343 Industries don't lose the run of themselves with Halo 5. I'd hate to see the soul of the series give way to ridiculous over-the-top action sequences.
But what did you think of the opening? Do you think Halo 5 is shapping up to be the perefect continuation of the Halo series? Personally, I love the whole team dynamic and that we can drop into each other's games at any time. But I hate that local multiplayer has been obliterated. It was one of the defining aspects of Halo and my favourite part of it! God damn it 343!
