After much speculation, Benicio Del Toro has confirmed the reports that he will be playing the villain in the upcoming [Star Wars: Episode VIII](tag:711868)! Not only did the actor, who also played a villain in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy, reveal his role, but he also let us in on when shooting for Episode VIII will begin.

It was while the actor was in Spain to promote his new movie A Perfect Day on a local radio station that he confirmed the news. The interview was conducted in Spanish, however a member of the Cantina message board over on Star Wars: Episode VII News has kindly translated:

Interviewer: And are you going to shoot something after that?
Benicio Del Toro: No, just… Star Wars is coming up, we will see how that turns out. I think we start shooting in March.
Interviewer: And what’s your role in this new Star Wars chapter?
Benicio: Ehhh…. the thing is…. They don’t let me talk too much about it, I’m like the villain.

Confirmation of a Del Toro appearance, and confirmation that filming begins in March? Awesome!

However, Star Wars Episode VII News did add that their translator found Del Toro's wording in the interview very interesting. When he explains his role as the villain he used the phrase "es como el villano," or "he is like the villain." Which seems a little odd right? If he knew his character was going to be the villain he could have just said "es el villano," or "he is the villain." While this could mean a number of things - such as the character seeming to be villainous but actually isn't - it's also just as likely Del Toro doesn't have all the details of his character, or was reluctant to let too many details slip out.

Regardless of what kind of character Del Toro will play, it's good to finally have this rumor confirmed, along with the fantastic news that filming will commence so soon.

In addition to the rumors about Benicio Del Toro, it was also revealed last this week that Olivia Cook, Tatiana Maslany and Gina Rodriguez were reportedly in the running to be cast as the female lead in Episode VIII. While the reports are yet to be confirmed, sources are saying that the actresses will have a screen test with John Boyega before the end of the month.
