Rovio Entertainment's Angry Birds first slingshotted into our lives in 2009 and since then it has been downloaded onto mobile devices more than three million times! However, no matter how much revenue those little critters brought in, they still remained super grumpy.

Over the last few years interest in the game has wained slightly, and Rovio is attempting to revamp interest levels with the release of Angry Birds the movie in 2016. Describing the film's basis to Entertainment Weekly, producer John Cohen (the force behind Despicable Me) explained:

"The question Rovio gets more than anything is ‘Why are these birds so angry?’” This is the origin story for how that conflict came to exist between birds and little green piggies."

EW also shared three stills from the film.

The story goes that the green pigs have been sneaking into the birds nests and pinching their eggs. This invasion leads three birds, Red, Chuck and Bomb to team up and confront their attackers.

Starring Peter Dinklage, Bill Hader, Jason Sudeikis and Josh Gad, Angry Birds will hit theaters July 1, 2016.
