Only Lady Gaga could star in a horror anthology as a blood sucking, murderous, sexually-voracious Countess and look more normal than usual doing it.
"One thing Ryan [Murphy] talked with me and Gaga about is we wanted the audience to look at her as an actor playing the Countess and completely separate from how her fans know her as Gaga." - Lou Eyrich [Costume Designer]
American Horror Story: Hotel sees Stefani Germanotta, better known as musician Lady Gaga, joining the Horror Story cast in her first major TV role as Elizabeth/The Countess, owner of the mysterious and deadly Hotel Cortez.
We don't know a whole lot about her yet, but we do know has already got fans pretty excited to see her make her debut in Season 5.
Don't Call Her A Vampire...
The Countess is a mysterious figure, she drinks blood to sustain her youthful looks, but show creator Ryan Murphy says she's not necessarily a vampire.
"I prefer the term ‘ancient blood virus. It’s not vampires. It’s really a form of hemophilia in a way. There’s no capes and fangs."
Call her what you may; the Countess reportedly sustains herself with a nutritious diet of sex and blood and her lovers, Donovan (Matt Bomer) and Tristan (Finn Wittrock) carry the same "blood virus", causing them to crave human blood. Rather than go around neck biting though, Gaga's Countess kills with a chainmail glove, edged with diamonds on the razor sharp nails.
She also has a brood of creepy little blonde children (as pictured above) which Gaga describes as "the most important thing to [the Countess]. More than anything, I think she wants to identify in a very human way."
I mean, that's cute and all, but I still wouldn't want to run into them in the hallways of the Hotel Cortez.
So, lets recap:
- Drinking of human blood
- Sexually voracious
- Brood of scary looking, blood drinking children
- Pale skin, pale hair, red lips
- A bloody, tooth marked neck
- Killer eyeliner
Right, not a vampire. Whatever you say Murphy.
A Love Triangle
One of her sub-plots will be the love (or sex?) triangle she gets caught in, between her partner of 20 years, Donovan, and newcomer Tristan - a "hypersexual" model with an addictive personality who is irresistibly drawn to the Countess, and presumably turned by her.
The Countess is bisexual, and there'll be some exploration of a previous involvement with Angela Bassett's Ramona Royale, another resident of the Hotel. After being jilted by the Countess Ramona is out for revenge,
"[The Countess and Ramona] are powerful women at opposite sides and at odds with one another, each believing that they’re right." - Angela Bassett
Ryan Murphy spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the "blood-filled foursome" that Gaga and Bomer filmed with two unnamed characters, whose throats they slash and blood they drink. Not the ideal end to a foursome really.
"[Gaga] is the only actress I think I've worked with who wanted to do more explicit stuff than was written," Murphy said. "You write a foursome for her and you expect a lot of questions. She never did that. She showed up and she was wearing diamond pasties, a Band-Aid on her hoo-ha, heels and a black veil that Alexander McQueen made for her on the day before his death. Then the crew gasped in delight and we were off!"
The first episode of Season 5 will introduce the Countess and her "nefarious plan", which will unfold over the course of the season.
