"You can't band together to fight without trust. And without trust, there was no hope. How do you rid the Earth of humans? Rid the humans of their humanity."
The 5th Wave is a young adult sci-fi, apocalyptic novel about what happens when aliens come to invade Earth. They plan to exterminate humanity through a series of waves, four of which have taken place prior to the start of this book. We follow the main protagonist Cassie as she searches for her younger brother Sam, who was taken from her, during the start of the 5th wave.

If you're a fan of The 5th Wave novel by Rick Yancey you've probably been dying for any kind of look at the movie. Besides a few behind the scenes photos (which you can find on The 5th Wave movie facebook page here) we haven't really gotten a look at what to expect. In fact, the whole process for this movie has kind of been swept under the rug. It's very easy to forget that this was becoming a movie with the lack of news about it. But that all changed within the last week.
First the trailer was leaked, I had been on tumblr and saw gifs of it floating around and thought I'd missed something while on vacation. After frantically trying to find the trailer anywhere, I at last found it on where else but tumblr.
Then the trailer was officially released the next day in hi-def without foreign subtitles, better to observe with.
Now it's been almost an entire year since I read The 5th Wave but everything looks correct, there wasn't a moment where I was like "Wait, what is happening in this scene? I don't remember this from the book." We get a look at the different waves meant to take out humanity with some intense music. We at least get a glimpse of all the important characters. There was the crucifix soldier scene from the beginning of the book, Sammy's stuffed animal Bear who's Cassie's only companion, the military base where they're training kids as soldiers. I'd say this is a pretty solid first trailer.
And then on September 4th we got the first movie poster from Fandango featuring Cassie and Sam alone in a world of ruin. I've seen some people wonder if this movie is about a natural disaster which it does look like that from the poster. I like that it kind of gives an air of mystery as to what the movie's actually about which would make people more interested. I'm half and half on wanting a distinct feel about what the movie's about from the poster and wanting it to have that mysterious feel.
As a fan of the book series, I have mainly positive feelings toward the trailer and the poster and I can't wait to see what else they give us in the months leading up to the movie release. Hopefully they'll step up their game with promoting this and do it in the right way that will bring fans both old and new.
What did you think of the trailer? Any scene in particular you can't wait to see on the big screen? Let me know in the comments!
The 5th Wave is set to release January 15th, 2016 in the US. No word on international release dates as of this time.
