The BBC have released a new trailer for 'The Magician's Apprentice,' the first episode of Doctor Who Series 9.

And already, it looks as if things are dire for the Doctor, indeed.

From what it seems, the Doctor has gone MIA and no one can find him - not even Missy/The Master, with whom Clara seems to have formed an uneasy alliance in her quest to find him. Desperation makes strange bedfellows, and all that. And Clara must be very desperate, indeed, because wherever the Doctor has gone, it seems to be a place from which he hadn't necessarily planned on returning, judging from his last will and testament that Missy hands over to Clara. Could that be why he left Clara behind without telling her where he was going? Did he know she'd come looking and so wanted her to stay away for her own protection?

Come now, Doctor, you ought to know Clara Oswald better than that by now.

Another thing worth noting is the high production value of the trailer. Doctor Who has long been held back from being fully embraced by as many fans as it could by the sometimes cringeworthy cheap-looking monsters and, well, let's face it, awful special effects. But the production values have slowly been getting better and better over the years, and this trailer looks about as slick as anything we've seen. As a die-hard Whovian, I'd love Doctor Who even if we never moved away from aliens in cheap-looking plastic suits and "pew pew" sounds, but it's great to see that as a new generation of fans upgrades, so is the show.

Doctor Who Series 9 returns September 19th.
