Throughout the late 90s and early 2000s I have no doubt that the theme song to Arthur was as firmly stuck in your heads, as it was in mine. The catchy song (sung by Ziggy Marley!) introduced us to the Read family, most notably Arthur, an anthropomorphic aardvark who was just trying to get through elementary school.
Much to my surprise, new episodes of Arthur are still airing, with a massive 19 seasons and 213 episodes under its belt! But while the characters in the TV series seem stuck in third grade forever, I can't help but wonder, what would they look like if they had aged normally. Luckily Buzzfeed illustrator Pedro Fequiere has taken care of all the guesswork for us, and given us a glimpse into what the cast of Arthur would look like all grown up (and hipster!). Check it out:
While undeniably still looking pretty similar to his childhood days, it does look like Arthur gained the ability to grow a pretty sick beard. The beard coupled with his cute beanie and overcoat completes his slick hipster look. You can catch Arthur (now probably known as Art) at your local coffee house, where he'd only be too willing to engage in some intellectual debates.
Unfortunately it looks as though some of those donuts may have caught up with Buster, but he still rocks the crap out the slightly grungy, hipster look, with his cut off jean shorts and 3-day stubble. His odd collection of tattoos makes for the perfect conversation starter, and while he hasn't exactly found his calling in life, for the time being he's just happy drifting in the ether, man.
Dora Winifred “D.W.” Read
Well, it's not really such a crazy idea that Arthur's little sister DW ended up as a angry pop-punk type. Still rocking the same color scheme all these years later, and has totally mastered that scowl, DW hasn't changed all that much save for a septum piercing and some fierce eyeliner. I like to think DW is still studying at college, still trying to decide her major.
Let's face it, out of all the characters in Arthur, Francine was definitely the one who was destined to be a hipster. Even the name Francine was crying out to be shortened to Frankie. These days you can probably catch Frankie biking around Elwood city on her fixie, which totally explains her ripped leg muscles.
Alan "The Brain" Powers
The Brain was the overachiever at school, and had big fears of failing, but these days he's mellowed out a little more. Though he's still at the top of his game (check those brainy tats!), gone are the days of a smart sweater-and-slack set. Instead they're replaced with casual overalls, and a funky headband. I especially like his colorful hair.
Binky (who is apparently a bulldog!) has undergone quite the transformation with his burly lumberjack look. While I'm not exactly sure what Binky would be doing these days, I can't help but feel as though it might be something to do with the theater, given his penchant for ballet and clarinet in the TV series.
Least surprising of any of the characters has to be Muffy. Of course this is what Muffy would grow up to look like - that girl was obviously the most chic student at Elwood Elementary, even in third grade. I suspect Muffy would definitely work in PR or communications, and whatever she ended up doing, she would almost certainly have a ton of followers on Snapchat or Instagram to make envious with her amazing lifestyle.
The whole gang
What say you? Do you think any of these predictions are close to reality for the characters of Arthur once they grow up?
