Irony is a difficult thing to explain. Similar in usage but not synonymous with sarcasm, irony is, simply put, a literary device used to highlight just what an unforeseen - and usually totally shitty - situation a character has found themselves in, contrary to earlier expectations.
These reversals of fortune are never more cruelly or dramatically represented than in the horror movie, where death comes swiftly, brutally, and often deeply ironically for the unwitting victims.
Check out 5 horribly ironic horror movie deaths...
1. Death is 'Lion' in Wait
Owen Wilson's character, Luke, nervously dodges a Lion swinging for his head in The Haunting. Later on in the movie, it is precisely this lion which takes his head clean off.
2. Man vs Nicotine
Movie: Alien vs Predator: Requiem
Going a little further than the standard 'those things'll kill ya' horror movie smoke joke, Alien vs Predator: Requiem sees a guard - previously warned against the dangers of smoking - crushed to death by a hatch sent flying by a Predator. After his crushing demise, we see the hatch said 'No Smoking'.
3. Be Careful What You Wish For
Movie: Scream 4
Olivia arrogantly states 'It's time for someone new to die'. Well, she kinda gets what she wants...
4. Shoulda Jumped the Shark
Movie: Deep Blue Sea
I think this moment is pretty familiar to most movie fans - it never gets old!
5. Oh. Poor Guy.
After having an entire conversation about whether the head retains consciousness post-decapitation, this unfortunate young chap gets to find out for himself. Brutal.
And remember: no matter what anyone tells you, the definition of irony cannot be explained by Alanis Morissette! College Humor amusingly correct the song 'Isn't it Ironic' to make it actually ironic in this excellent video...
