Life sure throws us some tough challenges and illnesses do not discriminate when it comes to who they strike down. There are some celebs out there who have been diagnosed with life-changing illnesses. These stars have kept on ploughing forwards, inspiring us along the way with how they have handled these unexpected challenges.
Can you guess who the celebs are who are living with illnesses that you (probably) never knew about?
10. Lady Gaga - Lupus
“Lupus is in my family and it’s genetic, and it’s funny ’cause my mother told me the other day that my fans were quite worried about me because I did talk about the fact that I was tested for lupus. And the truth is I don’t show any signs, any symptoms of lupus, but I have tested borderline positive for the disease. So as of right now, I don’t have it. But I do have to take good care of myself.”
9. Michael J. Fox - Parkinson's
The Back To The Future actor was diagnosed with Parkinson's when he was barely 30 years old. This inspiring actor set up the Michael J. Fox foundation for Parkinson's research. Incredibly, since 2000 this Foundation has raised more than $450 million to speed a cure for Parkinson's disease.
“I just knew I was going to have to make adjustments and I didn't know what I was gonna have to adjust to. But, to be corny about it, once you accept it and you learn about it and you realize you're part of a community and you realize you're in a position to do something and to make a difference and to help, well then it's just like, quit your bitchin’ and get on with it."
8. Sarah Hyland - Kidney disease
The young Modern Family actress is truly inspirational. She has had many ups and downs since her diagnosis with kidney dysplasia as a child. In 2012 she got the kidney transplant she so needed and amazingly her father was her donor. After life handed her lemons, she persevered to make lemonade and be happy.
“I was born with so many health issues that doctors told my mother I would never have a normal life. And she said, ‘You’re right, she won’t – but it won’t be because of her health. When my mother told me that story, it resonated with me: If I can’t have an ordinary life, I might as well have an extraordinary one. If you set your mind to something, you’ll achieve it.”
7. Halle Berry - Diabetes
''Diabetes turned out to be a gift. It gave me strength and toughness because I had to face reality, no matter how uncomfortable or painful it was'.'
6. Kim Kardashian - Psoriasis
Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that causes itchy skin rashes and lesions, but this selfie queen has been staying up beat about her diagnosis.
"I have psoriasis, there is nothing I can do about it so there is no reason why I should feel uncomfortable."
5. Pamela Anderson - Hepatitis C
"When I found out I had hepatitis, I wanted to make bikinis with pictures of livers on them and give the money to the Liver Foundation. Now I have people coming out of the deli, hugging me because they think I’m dying. I tell them, ‘I’m not dying. I’m fine. But if you wanna give me a free sandwich, go ahead!''
4. Frankie Muniz - Multiple strokes
Having two mini-strokes didn't stop this Malcolm in the Middle actor living his dream. This year alone we will see him acting in four productions, from The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water to Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! The way that this actor just keeps getting back up after being struck down is super inspirational.
''I'm still trying to make sense of it, but I'm happy that I am alive.''
3. Miley Cyrus - Tachycardia, heart condition
Miley opened up about her illness in her autobiography.
''The type of tachycardia I have isn’t dangerous. It won’t hurt me, but it does bother me. There is never a time onstage when I’m not thinking about my heart.”
2. Ben Stiller - Lyme disease
Ben is one of many celebs including Avril Lavigne, Alec Baldwin, and Ashley Olsen to name a few who have battled this crippling illness. Thankfully, he's doing much better now, which he told the Hollywood Reporter magazine:
''I'm symptom-free now, but Lyme doesn't ever leave your system. It's a really tough thing."
1. Selena Gomez - Lupus
Back in 2013 it was rumored that Selena was suffering from the chronic inflammatory disease which her family went on to confirm the following year. Despite this scary setback, Selena kept fighting for her dream.
"Sometimes you'll have moments where you'll feel weak. They're supposed to encourage you, they're supposed to motivate you and push you."
