1. THE BLIND SIDE
While The Blind Side would not really be considered a "college" football movie, it does tell a story of a young man's journey from high school to his college football career at the film's conclusion. It also has a cast of cameos of college football coaches portrayed by themselves and not actors, including Phillip Fulmer, Tommy Tuberville, Lou Holtz, and even University of Alabama coach Nick Saban. This is a film that demonstrates a family crossing racial boundaries because of faith, love, and a belief in a young man's ability to overcome all adversity to fulfill his dreams. In addition to seeing Sandra Bullock's Academy Award winning performance, The Blind Side is a fun watch for the entire family and definitely a must watch movie this football season.
2. THE EXPRESS
The Express was a film based on the life story of Ernie Davis, the first African American football player to win the Heisman trophy while he played for Syracuse. This movie tells the story of Davis following in the footsteps of Jim Brown with his incredible ability to run the ball whom, because of health issues tragically ended his NFL career with the Cleveland Browns. Even though The Express is a good football movie to watch, the film is actually a tragedy as it follows Davis' early life to his untimely death as a result of leukemia.
3. THE 5th QUARTER
Even though many people may have never heard of The 5th Quarter, it is probably one of the best college football films based on true events that was ever made. However, If you are going to watch The 5th Quarter make sure you have a box of tissue by your side. This tearjerker of a film is based on the real life tragic events that surrounded a family and how those events played a role in Wake Forrest's 2006 ACC football championship season. This movie tells the inspirational story of Wake Forrest football player, John Abbate and his 2006 season with the team, whom lost his younger brother in a tragic car accident earlier in the year. The 5th Quarter will make a grown man cry. It is definitely a must watch and will have you drawing closer to your family by the end of the film
4. WE ARE MARSHALL
We Are Marshall is another true story based on a tragedy surrounding a college football team. It chronicles the Marshall University football team's 1970 tragedy when their plane the team traveled on after a game crashed, killing everyone on board including players and coaches. In the aftermath of the tragedy, the college's football team fights an uphill battle to retain the football program and continue on with its football tradition at the university. Even though it may touch a tender spot for those with fears of flying or with family members who have lost loved ones in plane crashes, it is still a good college football move to watch.
Considered by many to be the best college football movie of all time, Rudy tells the inspirational story of Rudy Ruettiger's quest to make Notre Dame's football team against all odds. It chronicles Rudy's life as a young fan of the Notre Dame's Fighting Irish football team to his playing days with the team. The film Rudy is the classic movie that teaches us to never give up on our dreams no matter what type of adversity we have to overcome to see those dreams become true. If you are going to watch this film with small children, make sure parental discretion is used due to some occasional language. Rudy is definitely a great film to watch during the college football season and has even been put on an annual watch list for some. Every fan of college football needs to see Rudy at least once.
