Recently, the official poster for the movie [Assassin's Creed](tag:437814), based on the popular video game, was released to the public. The movie will star Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard and is set for release next year. Many fans are excited for this movie considering how they have been asking for it to be made since the release of the first game back in 2007.

The production of this film is a dream come true for video game fans, but why stop there? If this movie is successful, it may be the start (or more-so rebirth) of movies based on video games. After the utter failure due to poor direction of video game movies in the past (Super Mario Bros., anyone?), most people simply gave up on the concept.

With new technology coming out and with games having much stronger plots, it is looking more and more likely that we may see our favorite video game characters return to the silver screen. There are already announcements of Mega Man, World of Warcraft and The Last of Us movies being in development, but which other video game movies should we see? Here are seven popular video games that could be made into terrific movies...

1. Skyrim

Skyrim is currently one of the most successful fantasy video games to date. It follows the story of the Dragonborn who has the ability to absorb the souls of dragons and shout like dragons. The game is filled with hundreds of different story lines, including the main plot of the entire game surrounding the apocalyptic dragon named Alduin who brought the other dragons back to life and seeks to end the world.

With the help of a great cast and phenomenal special effects, Skyrim could easily become a very popular movie. With Game of Thrones being a smash-hit, why couldn't Skyrim? It has an amazing story that would make a truly incredible action-adventure film, or maybe even a TV show.

2. Call of Duty

Call Of Duty is, without a doubt, the world's most popular first-person shooter game. With more and more of these games coming out, at some point we have to ask ourselves, 'when will this become a movie?' With an enormous fan base, I'm surprised no one has tried it yet. War movies can be fun, but a Call of Duty movie would be amazing. The technologically advanced weaponry of the game series would look gorgeous on screen and could wow fans in new and incredible ways.

There are plenty of plots from the games the movie could follow, but if there was a movie, I'm sure a new plot would be created. Of course, a game like this could not go without a star-studded cast. I actually find it very likely that we will be seeing a high-budgeted Call of Duty movie within the next decade.

3. Grand Theft Auto

Grand Theft Auto is one of the most controversial games of recent years, but it is still very popular. The more recent versions of this game have actually had very in-depth plots with 'rounded' characters, including Trevor from Grand Theft Auto V, who has become a popular Internet character.

Creating a new plot about life on the streets of one of this game's popular cities may actually pan out to be a good movie. With action and amazing directional skills, this movie could turn out to be a very entertaining film to go see. Just don't bring your kids.

4. Halo

There has actually been talks of a movie based on this popular game being in development for some time now, but there has not been much visible progress. There has also already been a straight-to-digital movie on this, but it never gained much publicity so there is still room to grow from there. Nevertheless, Halo is another popular video game that could be very entertaining on the big screen. You think Call of Duty has advanced weaponry? Look again. The futuristic, alien setting of this game could be made into an impressive film. Imagine it as a cross between Avatar and Pacific Rim.

Unlike other fantasy games, Halo could also bring forth a human element since it is about human explorers. This movie would be a true spectacle and I hope that the rumored development of this film actually goes somewhere instead of just sitting at the bottom of some studio's pile of scripts.

5. Metal Gear Solid

Metal Gear Solid is home of the popular video game character Solid Snake who, to put it simply, is the perfect cross between James Bond and Daryl Dixon from The Walking Dead. Seeing this hero on screen would be seriously kick-ass (please excuse my French). His fighting skills would be phenomenal on screen, especially when a solid plot was added.

The action, the fighting and the overall badassery of Metal Gear Solid could really pan out to be the perfect summer thriller to go see. Plus, who wouldn't want to see Snake hiding under one of his boxes on screen? I know I do.

6. The Legend of Zelda

The Legend of Zelda game series has been around for almost 20 years now and has been one of Nintendo's biggest hits (obviously below Mario, though). Its fantasy-based adventure concepts could be easily made into a movie. With realistic creatures (unlike the Mario games), there would be no risk in screwing up the look of certain characters.

This game proves that you don't need guns or a metal suit to be a true hero. Link is one of Nintendo's star characters who I would love to see portrayed on screen. Just please don't have him breaking pots the whole time. I had enough of that back when I played those games.

7. Pokémon

Yes, I know, Pokémon is much more than a video game; it is also a trading card game and a retired TV show. However, its most popular format (especially in recent years) has been on handheld gaming devices. Pokémon is home to many different characters, including Pikachu, Squirtle and Charizard. With so many different characters and creatures, the filmmakers wouldn't even have to do much creative work. It would turn out to be a fairly easy job for them, but maybe not the special effects guys.

I would love to see the world of Pokémon come to life on screen, finally becoming live-action. Now that Hollywood's technology is finally advanced enough, there is no real reason why film studios have not green lit this film yet.
