Do you remember my review on adventure time? Well, a writer on adventure time, named Rebecca Sugar decided to move on and try new things, what she created became very successful, and her success was thanks to Steven.
Now the show is very 70's like with the art and the stylings especially this cover art, but the show's animation is absolutely beautiful I mean it's very obvious it's a foreign animation because American animation is a little more stylized whereas Steven has a little more broadening to its animation and my suspicions were confirmed during the credits.
But enough about the art, let's dive into the show .
The show surrounds Steven(duh!) and his three gem pals/guardians
And last but not least, Amethyst;
As you can see they all have different artistic choices and as such, have different personalities as well. Garnet is the leader of the gang always trying to take charge and always trying to calm the group down and stop fights. Although, I must admit I thought Pearl was more leadership material as she's the most level headed one and tries to bring reason to everything and sort things out properly but of course she has moments where she goes bat shit crazy herself, but I digress. And now comes Amethyst, Amethyst is that cool rocker chick who doesn't care much about anything and can do just about anything the boys can do and so she's very much aggressive and rebellious.
And what about Steven our main character. Well as the story explains it so eloquently, Steven is a product of a gem named Rose Quartz
And a human named Mr. Universe; Greg
So that makes Steven half human, half gem. What's a gem you might ask?
We don't really know that much as well, given the story lets on very little, all we know is that gems did come to Earth to colonize it from the Home World as the Gems called it, but then, Rose led a rebellion because they wanted the humans to roam free. So logically, Rose and her other gems got banished and decided to roam Earth. Rose fell in love with Greg because of his music and Greg, well he was enchanted by her beauty, and so they decided to procreate and Rose got pregnant with Steven. But just like Song Of The Sea(oh yeah, I'll review it), Rose has to give up her form so that Steven can be born in the world, but is never truly explained, and yet, with so little that is what attracts you more to it.
The art grabs you in and the stories sometimes get carried away, but when the story does it right, it fits into the art around it and you can't help but to get invested in the characters because they are so lovable and you want to know more about them and the world that they're in. So the supporting characters are important as well just like Connie
Whom I think is Steven's girlfriend but we aren't really sure of that but, they do kind of hint at it a lot so I guess it's implied. And I can't blame myself for making the assumption since, the finale of the first season basically spelled it out more but I could be wrong about this(Hey, I used to be good at guessing things, but then I got things wrong, so bite me!). But anyway, Connie and Steve?n do spend a lot of time with each other and even fuse once, or twice,
What's fusing? Well apparently only gems could do it. Especially since we found out Garnet was a fusion this whole time at the end of season 1 and really the gems themselves don't really know how Steven can do it since he's half human but I guess since he is half gem he still has that ability just like the ability of getting a shield from his belly gem. But I also think it's because of his need to protect the ones he loves or cares about just like his mother although we don't know very much about her as well, we know that Steven got that trait from her.
Also, it is note worthy that Steven was only able to access his powers after several episodes and when he finally does it is revealed to be only a defense mechanism and nothing else.
This show has lot's of things on its plate, but one thing still attracting about it is, its hypnotism and it's ability to attract through it's art and animation, because there's nothing really going on with Steven and the Gems and follows that kind of Adventure time plot or story line where it's always an adventure to somewhere and it's always to get these bad gems or whatever. And there's nothing more or nothing less, until the finale of the first season and the continuation from then on. But I have a feeling that the Adventure Time formula is still going to be used very much. But with the consequences of now opened up character development, its still exciting to see what's next, and I can't wait for more Steven Universe
