Back in 1996 there was a scene in the movie Matilda that made probably every child who watched it insanely jealous. No, it wasn't when Matilda made things fly around the room, or Amanda Thripp being thrown across a field of flowers by her pigtails, it was the scene when Bruce Bogtrotter, played by 12-year-old Jimmy Karz, was forced to eat an entire chocolate cake.
Sure the scene was supposed to be a horrible punishment, and these days I know that eating that much chocolate cake will only end in pain and possible public embarrassment, but back in 1996 there was nothing I would have loved more than to give it a go. Memory of the scene a bit rusty? Relive the glory of Bruce's triumph below:
The Matilda character Bruce Bogtrotter was Jimmy Karz's first role as an actor. However you might also remember him from an episode of ER, or from The Wedding Singer, when he got the pleasure of not only slow dancing with Drew Barrymore, but also sneaking a cheeky bum grab!
Following his roles in ER and The Wedding Singer in 1998, it seems like Karz quit acting at the ripe old age of 14. So what does the now 31-year-old former child star look like these days, and what is he up to? Well, he's certainly not conquering huge mountains of chocolate cake, check it out:
Since his retirement from acting, Karz has clearly been focussing on his academics. Karz first studied at St. John's University, New York, graduating with a degree in Communication Arts, then using his degree to work for MTV News for almost two years. However, after volunteering to teach low-income communities how to grow their own food, he realized his passion for biology and chemistry through gardening.
Following this, he then went to Loyola Marymount University and graduated with a degree in biochemistry. These days Karz studies medicine at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and traveled to Ecuador in 2014 for a medical mission trip to help the poor in the city of Duran.
Despite his dedication to his medical studies and work, Karz still remembers his time working on Matilda well, and luckily for us back in 2013 he even reunited with his former Matilda stars for a tea party that was filmed for the Blu-ray extras segment!
Check out Karz and Pam Ferris (Trunchbull) beautifully recreating that iconic scene from the much loved film:
Amazing! And Pam Ferris a.k.a Trunchbull can still strike fear into my heart all these years later — thank goodness, 21 years later, Jimmy Karz seems to have recovered from his chocolate-y ordeal!
