These celebs have used their fame as a tool to make fans and others aware of environmental issues. Behind the curtain there is a lot more going on than just hair and makeup. Here are just some of Hollywood's most dedicated philanthropists.
7. Eva Longoria - Eva's Heroes
From high-maintenance Gabrielle Solis in Desperate Housewives to Philanthropy. Kind hearted Eva built her charity as a place to help those with special needs to ''interact, grow, learn, and love''. The organisation offers everything from after school classes to summer school. After being inspired by her Sister , Eva decided to make it her mission to help young adults who have learning difficulties.
“I was extremely fortunate to grow up with an intellectually disabled sister. My mother became a special education teacher because of her, and therefore, I have been involved with all facets of this community since I could walk and talk.”
6. Michael J. Fox - Foundation for Parkinson's Research
The Back To The Future actor was diagnosed with Parkinson's when he was barely 30 years old. This inspiring actor set up the Michael J. Fox foundation for Parkinson's research. Amazingly since the year 2000, this incredible Foundation has raised more than $450 million to speed a cure for Parkinson's disease. Here's why Michael took that step to help others-
“I just knew I was going to have to make adjustments and I didn't know what I was gonna have to adjust to. But, to be corny about it, once you accept it and you learn about it and you realise you're part of a community and you realise you're in a position to do something and to make a difference and to help, well then it's just like, quit your bitchin’ and get on with it."
5. Leonardo DiCaprio - Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation
Back in 1998 lovely Leo established the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation with the mission of "protecting the world’s last wild places." The foundation is involved with 70+ environmental projects spread across 40+ countries.
His passionate environmental activism even flows into his everyday life; Leo owns electric and hybrid cars and has invested in solar panels on his home.
This sweet actor has spread his arms wide, helping everything from children who have been orphaned, to protecting our oceans, helping to preserve endangered wildlife and so much more.
Last year alone DiCaprio donated an astonishing $15 million dollars to environmental causes.
4. Matt Damon- H2O Africa/ Water Org
Water is something we often take for granted, but for other parts of the world clean water is a gift. Actor Matt Damon joined heroic forces with Gary White to form H20 Africa (which merged with Damon's other foundation Water Org back in 2009). These co-founders have transformed hundreds of communities in Africa, South Asia, and Central America by providing access to safe water and sanitation.
3. Oprah - Oprah Winfrey Foundation
Oprah is the Queen of daytime TV and at the same time is a dedicated philanthropist. Oprah donates millions of dollars each year to fund charities that are close to her heart and interest her.
This influential and kind-hearted lady also started her own foundation to operate the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa. With Oprah's help alongside donations, talented girls from grades 7 through to 12 have a chance of education is South Africa. The girls come from disadvantaged families and without the foundation in place, these girls would not be given the chance to go to school. Their beaming smiles really say without words how much of an impact Oprah has had on their lives.
2. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie - Jolie-Pitt Foundation
Angelina Jolie is a hard working philanthropist. Between being an actress, a UN Humanitarian Worker and a loving Mother, Angelina and Brad also set up their own foundation. The incredible Jolie-Pitt Foundation helps Cambodia, Namibia, Ethiopia and more. The foundation stretches it's arms wide-taking care of everything from animals to funding centres for children infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis.
Celine Dion - Celine Dion Foundation
Celine's heart really did 'go on' to do amazing things. This non-profit organization supports a whole variety of causes and medical foundations. The foundations focus is on helping sick or underprivileged children.All staff that sign up to work for the foundation do it straight from the goodness of their hearts. Staff work voluntarily so that all money can be raised for those children who need it most. And sweet Celine is the National Celebrity Patron for Cystic Fibrosis Canada.
