Brace yourself, bad puns are coming.

When Iron Man hit the theatres in 2008, no one expected it to become such a massive success. It also laid the foundations for the masterpiece known as The Avengers. One of the most popular films of 2012, and to many, the best superhero movie ever, The Avengers was the culmination of Phase One of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That obviously means it was full to the brim with references to past and future movies.

The mid-credits scene of The Avengers was our first glimpse of Thanos, and his menacing smile. That scene was seemingly perfect. And yet, there was something odd about it which had bothered me till now. Here is the scene in case you want to refresh your memory:

Here is how the scene goes:

The Other: Humans ... They are not the cowering wretches we were promised. They stand. They are unruly, and therefore cannot be ruled. To challenge them is to court ... death.
Thanos: (smiles)

At first glance, it simply seems like Thanos is giving a threatening smile, thinking something along the lines of "this will be fun". He can easily destroy Earth. After all, he has a giant army of Chitauri at his command, and even without the possession of the Infinity Gauntlet, he is extremely powerful. However, I think it's something bigger, something which many people didn't notice. You see...

Thanos could be smiling because of Mistress Death

Mistress Death is.... well, exactly what her name says. Death (literally). And typically, Thanos is in love with her, and will do anything to impress her. Now let's look back at the dialogue.

The Other: Humans ... They are not the cowering wretches we were promised. They stand. They are unruly, and therefore cannot be ruled. To challenge them is to court ... death.
Thanos: (smiles)

Here, The Other could have easily been referring to Death (with a capital D), also known as Mistress Death. To "court death" can also be interpreted as "to marry Death", which is what Thanos wants, and becomes the reason he smiles.

The best part? Its not complete speculation that Mistress Death might be appearing in the MCU.

A few months ago, the director of the upcoming Doctor Strange movie, Scott Derrickson, tweeted the following picture.

While this may seem a simple cover of a comic book, look at the caption for the picture below it.

As will we all...

What does that mean?

That Mistress Death could appear in none other than the Doctor Strange movie, which comes out in November 2016. After all, Doctor Strange is an extremely powerful character, and will be the gateway to action on a cosmic scale. It would make complete sense to introduce a character like Death in his movie.

In an interview, Thanos (Josh Brolin) himself expands on this point:

“His relationship with Death, who is actually the woman, I love that. You can take Sin City [in which Brolin plays a man obsessed with a dark-hearted woman] and pump it full of steroids, and then you have Thanos. I like that he’s motivated by that — not just motivated by destruction or death or this or that. He’s motivated by a very identifiable, human trait.”

Which, honestly, is awesome. The thought of Thanos being motivated by something as fundamental as love will be a good addition to the MCU.
