Well today I watched a great comedy that I had seen once before and that film was Tropic Thunder. Tropic Thunder tells the story of the making of a Vietnam war film which goes horribly wrong when a $4 million explosion goes off without the cameras rolling, so the director sends the actors out into the wilderness to capture some footage to salvage the film which unwittingly catches the attention of a drug lord and the actors have to become real action stars to survive. Tropic Thunder stars Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr., Jack Black, Jay Baruchel, Brandon T. Jackson and Tom Cruise.

There are a lot of positives to this film which include: clever and witty humour, good acting, great plot progression, fun action and a brilliant story. The one thing that makes or breaks a comedy is the jokes and this film made me laugh a lot whether it be because of its funny conversations between the characters, the great one liners ('I'm a lead farmer') or its hilarious examination of movie making and Hollywood. The acting from the leads is great, Stiller's and RDJ's comedic timing is perfect and the obvious standout is Tom Cruise as the movie producer where every line that comes out of his mouth is pure comedy gold. Even though it is for a fake movie all the action in this film is surprisingly great and really fun to watch. The story for the film is really good as it develops well and in a manor which when you look back at it the plot is actually quite inventive because the film's plot mirrors the fake film, the plot isn't fantastic but the premise is really good and that sets up the comedy perfectly.

I do have one small problem with the film and that is that I feel the laugh-out-loud jokes don't hit at the start of the film. The first 20 mins of the film is enjoyable and has some giggles but nothing (apart from the fake trailers) was actually hilarious I didn't find myself laughing properly until the last two acts of the film, I feel as if the jokes were spread really thin at the start before getting to the good stuff in the rest of the film.

Overall I think that Tropic Thunder is a magnificent comedy with an unfortunately weaker first act but as a whole it is still brilliant so taking everything I have said into consideration I rate this film:
