Solano County, California. Friday December 20th, 1968
It was a big night for 16 year old Betty Lou Jensen. She was about to go on her first date. As she put on her purple dress getting ready for her big night, 17 year old , David Faraday was borrowing his parents 1961 Rambler station wagon. David was the son of Jean Faraday. From all accounts he was a good boy. He was an Eagle Scout with a pretty good reputation.
Lake Herman Road was mainly just a shortcut used from Vallejo, Ca to Benicia, Ca. It didn't have a lot of traffic other than some people driving through on their way to work, the occasional fisherman, and every now and then teenagers looking to get away from prying eyes for some alone time. On this night David and Betty would find themselves in spot parked on a little gravel turnout in front of a locked chain linked fence gate.
The two young lovers did not know this would be their last night on this earth. One can only speculate what the two were talking about when an unknown man happens up on them. Did this man come by them by chance? Was he following them? Did he know them? These are the questions that have plagued many police and amateur sleuths over the years. One has to ask themselves, would the fate these two young people met that night had been avoided if they had just been in a different place at a different time.
One thing is for certain. This man that happened upon them that night was a predator. A monster of the worst kind. No one really knows if he ordered them out of the car or if he fired a shot at them and they tried to run for their lives. One shot was fired through the roof of the station wagon that never struck anyone, and also one through the rear window of the station wagon. David Faraday was shot behind the left ear by a 22 caliber bullet. This shot behind the left ear reminds me of how a professional assassin would execute his mark .
When the police arrived they found David's body lying outside the passenger door of the vehicle. Keep in mind that David was driving. We have to ask ourselves why he was lying on the passenger's side of the car. Was he toyed with? Was he trying to protect ,Betty?( I like to think he was) Was he indeed executed?. When they found David he was already dead ,but his brain didn't know it yet. They could still see the foggy steam from each breath he took as his lungs expanded and contracted trying to cling on to dear life. They watched the breath leaving his body even as they drew the white chalk outline around his body.
They found Betty's, body lying a little further away on the passenger side of the station wagon. It appeared as if she was trying to run. One can only speculate that as the killer assassinated young ,David, with a shot behind the left ear that , Betty saw this and tried to get away. As she ran the unknown suspect sprayed five shots into her back going through her purple dress that she had worn to go on her first date. She bled to death.
The strange and scary thing behind this is that the police just minutes before the murder had almost drove down that road to look for a fisherman who had not returned home when they got a call to go to the Hell's Angels pad on Warren Street in Vallejo. It boggles the mind to think that just a few small changes of chance and this horrible crime could have been stopped, avoided, or possibly the killer even caught. Another strange fact about this crime. The killer only had about seven minutes to commit this horrid act and leave the scene without being caught according to witness reports from people in the area that night. One has to wonder, where did he go? The name that this low life of a person would come to be known as ....The Zodiac. For the first time ever the images of the crime scene and the victims can be viewed in color. Making it more real ti life that these were real people and this is not just some story for entertainment. These were real people, real kids, that lost their life to some selfish, unknown person who to this day was never captured or identified. Maybe one day his time will come.
