For years now, Marvel fans across the world have eagerly anticipated the announced Captain Marvel movie. Not only is Captain Marvel an amazing character, but she would also mark Marvel's first film to feature a female protagonist. Sure, Marvel's got Maria Hill, Peggy Carter and Black Widow, but those three are side characters. Considering that the Captain Marvel movie will debut one year after DC's own Wonder Woman, there's going to be a lot of eyes waiting to see which studio handles a female lead superhero film better.
Emily Blunt is without a doubt one of the best actresses in the business and has repeatedly had her name attached to the project. While nothing has ever escalated beyond pure rumor and speculation, Blunt herself has been very outspoken about all the fans that want her to take the role. While promoting her latest movie Sicario at TIFF, Emily Blunt had these thoughts on share on the matter:
I think it’s because the list is very short, because we don’t see women in these kind of roles. So I think as soon as you do a role like that, like Charlize did or I did, or Rebecca’s done -- there’s like four of us or something. And Jen Lawrence. So I feel like us four, we get talked about -- and Angie, Angelina. So it’s a list of like, four women who are going to be considered for those kind of roles. So I think that’s why the rumors happen, because they’re like, "who else? Surely not another girl can wield a gun," you know what I mean? "A woman doing push-ups? There’s only one who can do that."
She brings up a good point, doesn't she? Most of the women we think about for action roles are the ones we've already seen in action roles before. Even Gal Gadot getting the role of Wonder Woman can be attributed to her time in the Fast & Furious movies. It's very easy to think of Charlize Theron or Jennifer Lawrence in a physically demanding role, but who else is there to take on these parts?
Here are five unlikely woman who I think would make a fantastic Captain Marvel:
Alexandra Daddario has really been one actress to focus on over the recent years. She's guest starred in multiple TV series and movies and will no doubt be a highly recognizable name in the near future. Not only could she bring Captain Marvel to life, but she's got the acting chops to hold her own while sharing the screen with the other, more experience Avengers.
Reese Witherspoon is an award winning actress who definitely deserves to be in more movies. She's got the looks, she's got the skill and she's got name recognition. Frankly speaking, if Marvel can make the world believe that Paul Rudd is an Avenger, they can very well do the same with Reese!
Emma Stone is one of the best parts of the recently killed off Amazing Spider-Man franchise. She wasn't just Peter Parker's girlfriend, she was his partner. She was tough, sassy, and courageous. This is why I think Marvel needs to give her a chance to shine all on her own. She's a highly talented actress that would completely nail the role of Captain Marvel.
Before you scoff at the idea of Anna Farris being Captain Marvel, thinking about it this way. Her husband, Chris Pratt, also used to play the lovable dumb idiot. He also didn't seem like he was fit to be a superhero and he definitely didn't look the part. Today, Star-Lord is many people's favourite Marvel hero. I highly believe that Marvel could make lightning strike twice and make an action star out of the ever lovable, Anna Farris. Also, just imagine Star-Lord and Captain Marvel sharing the screen together in the Infinity War movies!
Rachel McAdams is an incredibly talented woman who I frankly think could handle any role thrown at her. She's seen more than her fair share of romance films and she would no doubt blow everyone away with the chance to be Captain Marvel.
