Tom Hardy won our hearts last year in the epic Mad Max Fury Road, and although he's only achieved mega star fame in past few years, he has been acting for quite a while.

Below is a round up of some interesting facts about Tom's personal life, passions and projects that you may not have known about. Enjoy!

8.) He Was Featured On Many Major Lists!

In 2009, Tom Hardy landed a spot on Variety's "Top Ten Actors to watch". A few years later in 2013, he landed number 17 on Empire's "100 Sexiest Movie Stars". Of course there have to be many other lists that he's been featured, but those are two major achievements!

7.) Hardy Played A Star Trek Villain!

Sure, his menacing ways may have come to the spotlight when he played Bane, but prior to that he also played the character Shinzon in Star Trek: Nemesis.

6.) He Went To The Same School As Fassbender!

Both Tom Hardy and Michael Fassbender attended the same drama school in London in 1998. They were classmates, and Hardy stated that Fassbender was the best actor at the school. I'm sure many people agree.

5.) He First Appeared In Band Of Brothers!

While his cinematic debut was in Black Hawk Down, Hardy acted in two episodes of the powerful WWII mini-series Band of Brothers as Pfc. John Janovec. Oddly enough, his drama classmate Michael Fassbender acted in the same series!

4.) He Has Friends In High Places

Hardy became good friends with actor Leonardo DiCaprio after they acted together in Christopher Nolan's Inception. Leo convinced Hardy to take a look at The Revenant, and they ultimately ended up acting together again when they both signed on for the film. He also became good friends with Benedict Cumberbatch after they acted together in Stuart: A Life Backwards and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

3.) Gary Oldman Is One Of His Personal Idols!

According to IMDB, Oldman is one of Hardy's idols. That's lucky for Hardy, because he has acted alongside Oldman in four different movies: The Dark Knight Rises, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Lawless, and Child 44.

2.) Tom Is Actually His Middle Name!

Though the whole world knows him as Tom Hardy, his name is actually Edward Thomas Hardy. Tom does roll of the tongue a bit nicer though doesn't it?

1.) His Dog Had The Same Name As One Of His Biggest Roles!

You may know Tom Hardy as Bane from The Dark Knight Rises or Eames from Inception, but his biggest role has to be the lead character in Mad Max: Fury Road. Strangely enough, though Hardy didn't grow up with the movies, he was given a dog in his teenage years that in fact was named Mad Max. He even remarked on the name:

"I never liked the name Mad Max, because I didn't think it was fair to call a dog mad, he was just misunderstood."

Unfortunately though, poor Max passed away in 2011, oddly enough the same year that Hardy got the part of Max Rockatansky in Fury Road.

Tom Hardy has really impressed us all with his acting chops over the last few years, and we can all be sure that he still has many amazing performances ahead of him. Happy birthday Tom! I can't wait to see what you have in store for us.
