"So Jack, what can i do for you?"
"Weeell... I'm what you call.. new around here, and thought what better place to start than here"
I looked at him, confused.
"Yes. You see, you can learn a lot from the paper.'
I grinned at him.
Jack grinned. Then looked down at his side, staring at something.
"Well, it's been wonderful Miss Wayne, but duty calls!"
He ran out the door.
"What about the paper...?"
I ran out of the office, hoping to see him, but he was no where in sight. What a strange man.
Shaking my head, i went back into my office.
I was driving home, still thinking about that man at the office. Jack. And his scars.
To most people they'd be creepy. But for some reason, i found them intriguing.
There's a story behind those scars. Wonder what it is...
My thoughts drifted away once i got home, noticing my dad coming out the house towards my car. I jumped out upon parking, meeting up with him.
A thing he's done with me since i was about 5. But i still loved it. I noted his nice looking suit, wiggling my eyebrows.
"Just dinner. Have you ate?"
"No and believe me, my stomach is letting me know"
"Well come on"
"This is such a beautiful restraunt. I need to come here more often."
I decided to tag along for the night with dad and this girl. She seemed nice enough about it.
We were getting taken to a table, when dad stopped upon seeing Rachel Dawes and Harvey Dent.
"Rachel, fancy that"
"Bruce, fancy that"
I looked at dad, giving him a look. He just shook it off. I turned to Rachel and Harvey, smiling.
Rachel stood for a hug, while Harvey shook my hand, a warm smile on his face.
"Its finally nice to meet you Mr. Dent. I've heard such great things about you"
He turned towards dad, with a little smile, shaking his hand.
"The famous Bruce Wayne. Rachel's told me everything about you"
"I certainly hope not"
I gave him another look. He just smiled.
It's always been pretty cool to have a dad as a hero. I mean of course, not everyone thinks he is, but to me, he is.
But sometimes it takes a toll on him. Hell, it takes a toll on him to be Bruce Wayne half the time.
"So, lets put a couple tables together"
Harvey looked around, cleary not wanting too.
"I'm not sure they'll let us"
"They should. I own the place"
Bruce pointed to another table, waving a server to move it. I shook my head in frustration.
Sometimes, it was amazing to have a dad that owned half of Gotham, but sometimes, its also annoying.
I looked at Rachel, mouthing a sorry to her. She looked at me with a smile, knowing just how my dad can be.
The conversation started with the blonde talking.
"How would you want to raise children in a city like this?"
I just rolled my eyes. Honestly, it's an okay place. I mean sure the crime rate may be through the roof, but that makes it interesting.
"I was raised here, i turned out okay"
Then dad looked towards me, smiling.
"And i think i've raised Bella well myself"
Everyone smiled. But the blonde countined to talk.
"I'm talking about the kind of city that idolizes a masked vigilante"
"Gotham city is proud of a ordinary citizen standing up for whats right"
"I agree. He does what he can for Gotham, but many people can't see that. They fear him in a way. When they really shouldn't"
Harvey nodded. Dad gave a little smile.
"But who gets the point of the Batman?"
"We did. All of us who stood by and let scum take control of our city"
"But this is a democracy Harvey"
"When their enemies were at the gates, the Romain's would suspend democracy and appoint one man to protect the city. And it wasn't considered an honor, it was considered a public service."
I smiled, looking at dad.
"Harvey, the last man that they appointed to protect the republic was named Cesar, and he never gave up his power"
"Okay fine. You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain."
I considered his words, continuing to listen to him.
"Look, whoever the Batman is he doesn't want to do this for the rest of his life how could he? Batman is looking for someone to take up his mantle"
I looked up to see Rachel looking at me. I gave a little smile, then looked to dad.
It's true. He can't do this for the rest of his life. But is he really ready to let Batman go?
The blonde answered.
"Someone like you Mr. Dent?"
"Maybe. If i'm up to it"
She grinned, putting a menu over his eyes.
"What if Harvey Dent is the capped crusader?"
"If i was sneaking out everynight, someone would have noticed by now"
Harvey took Rachel's hand, grinning at her. I looked over at dad, seeing the uncomfortable look he was trying hard to hide.
I knew that dad has always had feelings for her. Rachel is a great person. They've always been close. But with dad being Batman, it's been difficult.
"Well, i'm sold Dent. I'm going to throw you a fundraiser"
"That's nice of you Bruce, but i'm not up for election for three years"
And hopefully during that fundraiser, i could get that interview i'm assigned to.
Bruce shook his head.
"No, you don't understand. One fundraiser with my pals, you'll never need another cent"
I looked around the restraunt some, tuning somewhat out of the conversation. Tonight was very eventful.
What Harvey said, made sense. Some people that try to be the hero, come out okay. But sometimes, even if they do mange to make it out, they lose apart of themselves in the process.
I scanned the room a bit, looking at all the familar people eating and laughing.
Mostly i knew them because of dad, but my eyes landed on a familar face. One i knew dad didn't know.
He was sitting right behind Rachel. I never noticed until now.
He was wearing a nice suit. As I was looking, he slowly turned in his seat, locking eyes with me, then grinned, raising his glass, then drank. I gave a little smile, then did the same.
Dad looked at me, giving me a strange look.
"Oh, i just wanted to raise a toast to Gotham's new DA, Harvey Dent"
Harvey smiled warmly at me, then everyone raised their glasses.
But i couldn't keep my eyes from wondering back to Jack.
I looked towards his table, to see no one there. I looked around the room for him, and found him walking towards the front.
"Excuse me for a moment"
I rose from the table, heading towards the front, walking the fastest i could without being given weird looks.
I made it outside, and saw Jack leaning on the wall. He smiled upon seeing me, that same humored look from before.
"Hellooo. Couldn't stay away from me could you?"
"I was hoping i'd catch you before you got away"
He lifted his hands in the air, laughing.
"You got me"
"Well, i was just wondering if you still needed my help at the paper? You left so suddenly."
"No help required anymore. I found what i was looking for"
He smiled a humored smile.
"Well okay. But you know where to find me otherwise"
I grinned at him, then walked back into the restaurant.
