The upcoming season 5 of Once Upon a Time is shaping up to be one of the best yet. A Dark Swan, a magical journey to the kingdom of Camelot, and the introduction of Brave heroine, Princess Merida, has all the means to become the series' most tantalizing display so far.
A week ago, it was revealed that Meghan Ory, who portrays Ruby / Red Riding Hood on the fantasy drama, would be returning to the series in a guest starring role. She was last seen in the Season 3 finale, "There's No Place Like Home". I personally have been begging co-creator Adam Horowitz for months to bring Ruby back, as her story is one of the many that didn't receive a true Once Upon A Time happy ending.
Alongside Ory, Jamie Chung will return to the series as sword-wielding, gender barrier-breaking soldier, Mulan. The last time we saw Mulan was the episode "Quite A Common Fairy" that centered around the Charmings and Regina seeking the aid of the wingless fairy, Tinkerbell. It also showcased the show's first openly bisexual character when Mulan, long believed to be deeply in love with Prince Phillip, had actually fallen in love with Sleeping Beauty/Princess Aurora. After deciding not to reveal her true feelings to Aurora when Aurora explains that she and Philip are about to have a baby, Mulan leaves the company of the pair and joins The Merry Men under the direction of Robin Hood.
For a show that doesn't really play on the cliche of damsels in distress, the return of these two characters is a most welcome one as our beloved heroes and former villains seek out a way to save The Savior, Emma Swan, who, in a selfless effort to protect Regina, sacrificed herself to the darkness.
Once Upon A Time returns with Season 5 on September 27, 2015, on ABC.
