Now, typically I don't get into the whole "celebrity vs celebrity" thing very often. I tend to stick to movie rumors, speculations, fan castings, that sort of thing. But I feel that this is too good to pass up without sharing it with the rest of you.
Now, before we go into detail about what Paul Bettany said about Jason Statham on Conan, we need to first see what the Avengers: Age of Ultron actor is responding to in particular here.
Jason Statham's Feelings on Superhero Movies
While promoting the movie Spy, Jason Statham revealed his true feelings about superhero movies. Here's what the actor had to say:
"Any guy can do it. I mean, I could take my grandma and put her in a cape and then put her in a green screen, and they’ll have stunt doubles come in and do all the action. Anybody can do it. They’re relying on stunt doubles and green screen and $200 million budget. It’s all CGI created."
It's no secret that I am huge superhero fan. I grew up with comics most of my life, I watched all the cartoons every Saturday morning, and I've seen (almost) every superhero movie there is worth watching. These deep, heartfelt stories have so much history and lore to them.
Comic book fans have always dreamed of seeing their favorite superhero on screen and thankfully we live in a day and age where we are seeing all of the biggest name superheroes getting their own solo films and teaming up in films like The Avengers and Justice League. It's a really great time to be a superhero fan.
Now, I'll say this about Statham's comment: he's entitled to his own opinion. He looks at what a film can do whereas when I watch a film, I try to look at what a film is saying. I want the story, I want the emotion, the drama, and the heart.
I can honestly say that I've never seen a Statham movie where I felt that big, epic story being told. To me, Statham is just an action nut. He's got a massive amount of skill in his stunts and martial arts abilities. For that, I enjoy his movies like The Expendables and The Transporter; he's good for those types of films.
But as a fan of superhero movies and superheroes in general, I just didn't care for his comment too much. I feel like there are a lot of actors who invest a lot of time, effort, and energy into their superhero roles and should be praised for that effort.
Paul Bettany's Feelings
But this article isn't about how I feel about superhero movies or about how I feel regarding Statham's condescending statements about them. No, this is about Paul Bettany's response to the Expendables actor's statement on Conan.
While on Conan, the Age of Ultron actor, who played "Vision", was asked about his opinion on Statham's statement regarding how "easy" it is to create a superhero film.
Check out the video below and the hilarity will ensue:
Now, if there's some reason you are unable to get this video to play, I'll provide a transcript below of the actor's statement:
"He's brilliant at what he does. I couldn't do it," Bettany began, "And it's true, I try and do as many of the stunts I can, but there are times when it's too dangerous or it's too tricky. And maybe he should think about investing in like, an acting double.I'm just saying. I would never talk s--- about somebody else's work. But I read the contract, they employed me as an actor, and stuntmen are very good at what they do, so let them do it. But if there's a really, really tricky scene with some very tricky dialogue, one might consider bringing in an acting double for Jason Statham."
Harsh, but honest. I have to kind of agree with Paul here.
I guess the moral of this story is that you should really try and be respectful of what others do and not undersell it, especially if you work in the same industry. Paul and Jason are both actors in Hollywood but aren't the same kind of actors to where they're going to get the same kind of roles.
Don't tear down others because there's honestly someone is bound to come along and point out all of your flaws as well.
