This week at Toronto International Film Festival, as bonafide heartthrob Johnny Depp and his wife Amber Heard sauntered up the Black Mass red carpet to the adoration of many a fan, the Pirates of the Caribbean star managed to prove something that was previously thought impossible: He is indeed human and ages like the rest of us mere mortals!
Depp was snapped on the promotional tour looking a little larger than what we've come to be accustomed with him over the years, a sight that has led to many social media users and bloggers sharing uncomplimentary messages regarding his weight gain.
New York Post's Reed Tucker had some strong words reserved on Depp's visage at this year's Venice Film Festival, saying:
The actor’s face, chiseled just a few months ago, had swelled into a puffy oval, and the rest of his body looked as if it had gotten just as round.
His hair appeared greasier than usual, and topping off his look, one of his teeth was red for some mysterious reason. A stain? A stray piece of cranberry? Some sort of pirate thing? We have no idea.
The madness continued over on Twitter, where users decided to add their ten cents:
Despite the resoundingly harsh words, we have to bear in mind that Depp is 52 years old, and if allegations of his relapse into heavy drinking are to be believed, the weight gain is an indication of the pressures of performing at the top for what feels like an absolute age now.
But honestly, has he really changed that much? Let's have a look and see...
Time Flies: The Many Faces of Johnny Depp
From his breakout role in the late Wes Craven's Nightmare On Elm Street, and over the 30-odd years Depp has been active, he has earned the reputation as one of the most versatile actors of his generation, and rightfully so.
The talented performer managed to melt all of the hearts with his chiseled good looks and ultra cool demeanor along the way, before taking his skills as a character actor to unreal heights:
Nightmare On Elm Street
Here's an innocent and fresh faced 21-year-old Depp breaking hearts in the slasher classic. From this moment, guys around the world knew they had some serious competition.
Then of course came one of Depp's most iconic looks, and the one that really hammered home the fact that "we've got a badass over here!"
And, of course:
Where he proved he wasn't just a pretty face, and had the depth of range to pull off this modern day retelling of Pinocchio.
Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas
Dat bald patch tho...
And in between roles in Sleepy Hollow, Chocolat and Blow, Depp pulled off the impossible again and succeeded in making "guyliner" cool for a hot minute!
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
And right up to...
Oscar buzz and a truly terrifying looking turn out, Depp's performance in Black Mass could be his return to form.
Johnny Depp is a master of character, and has had many a face over the time he's been one of Hollywood's elite, which naturally puts him front and center of the public eye and a tirade of abuse.
As far as I'm concerned, it's his body and he can choose to do with it as he wants. And if the aforementioned allegations of drinking are true, let's give the man some support, because he is only human after all.
