American Horror Story is a real monster of the TV scene: after the show shocked and delighted viewers in its first season, ratings have only increased in subsequent seasons. The critical reception has not been so favourable lately though: while Coven and Freak Show deliver all the glossy gruesomeness we've come to expect from American Horror Story, they didn't quite pack the punch of Murder House and Asylum. But the latest season of the gory anthology show is getting set to wow viewers once again, due in no small part to Lady Gaga's Elizabeth (aka the Countess).
The casting of Lady Gaga in American Horror Story: Hotel came as a surprise, but one that made so much sense. Gaga and AHS go together like black capes and blood: aesthetically and thematically linked, it feels like Lady Gaga has finally come home to her creepy Hotel Cortez in the new promo.
Gaga's star power will no doubt boost the ratings for American Horror Story season 5, sending AHS into the realms of TV royalty. It was a savvy move then, to make the most of Lady Gaga: instead of giving her a bit part, AHS season 5 will centre around the Countess' vicious reign over the Hotel, her numerous romantic entanglements, and ex-lovers out for revenge.
Gory Sex Scenes For Gaga
Could we really expect anything less? Weird sex has long been a part of Lady Gaga's image, and American Horror Story will be capitalising on that in a big way. We've had plenty of teasers and story snippets from the set, and it was revealed recently that not only will we be getting a sex scene from Gaga, it will be a foursome that culminates in double murder (and blood sucking, naturally.)
Reports of the foursome have been as exciting as you'd imaging: Entertainment Weekly was behind the scenes for this episode, and described just how enthused Gaga was to watch her co-star Matt Bomer slay their coital counterparts with her bedazzled and be-clawed gauntlet.
By all accounts, Gaga has been excited about American Horror Story season 5 from the very start. In fact, she was the one to reach out to the creative team about starring in the show! Creator Ryan Murphy was only too happy to grant Lady Gaga her request to be part of AHS, and soon revealed how Gaga was ready to give it her all on the Hotel set.
"She’s the only actress I think I’ve worked with who wanted to do more explicit stuff than was written. You write a foursome for her and you expect a lot of questions. She never did that. She showed up and she was wearing diamond pasties, a Band-Aid on her hoo-ha, heels, and a black veil that Alexander McQueen made for her on the day before his death. Then the crew gasped in delight and we were off!"
But it's not all fun bloodbaths and sexy times. Season 5 will deal with a lot of ideas of viruses, drug addiction, and of course hauntings. And the Countess isn't just a deranged and demonic villain: Lady Gaga assured fans that Elizabeth will go through her own struggles as she deals with her "ancient blood virus"...
"The Countess is a very old soul. She’s extremely strong. She’s been through so much. It’s kind of impossible for anything to penetrate her. This show in many ways is about her survival and there is an amazing journey that touches on the mythology of viruses and in what way these afflictions change our lives and bring us together and tear us apart."
And viruses won't be the only challenge the Countess will face in season 5...
Ex-Lover Out For Blood
It seems as though the Countess should be a bit more careful in her romantic escapades, as ex-lover Ramona Royale (played by Angela Bassett) seems to have a bit of a vendetta against Gaga's character.
Ramona is a famous actress, frequently visiting the Hotel Cortez but never staying there long term (probably wise, considering the Hotel is filled with creepy children and people sown into mattresses). A large part of her story seems to be her jealousy over Elizabeth's new favoured lovers, as Bassett revealed...
"I have a very strong, real lasting relationship with Stefani’s [Lady Gaga’s] character. So I’m sure I’ll be at odds with Donovan (Finn Wittrock) — who gets the girl?"
Ramona and Elizabeth seem to also have had some kind of lovers' spat before the show began, which will feed into the tension between them. Bassett went into more detail when describing their relationship.
"They are powerful women at opposite sides and at odds with one another, each believing that they’re right."
Well we're excited to see all these complicated romantic webs in American Horror Story season 5, and how the Countess juggles her lovers with LAPD investigations and visiting serial killers (look out for Lily Rabe in the Halloween double episode Devil's Night!). Oh and there's also that mysterious connection between Hotel Cortez and the Murder House from season 1... Could Lady Gaga's Countess be behind all the hauntings? We can't wait to find out!
