Fantastic Four star Kate Mara has come out and said what everyone else was thinking about one of the biggest box office bombs of the year, joking about the fact that she, and no one else, actually went to see her film.
It's fairly rare to see an actress poke fun at their own movie, especially so recently after it was released - but the failure of the once-promising Fantastic Four cannot be denied, and Mara clearly decided that no amount of sand could accommodate the burial of her head.
In a recent interview for The Martian with Entertainment Tonight, Mara found herself trapped between two fellow Marvel stars, Sebastian Stan (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) and Michael Peña (Ant-Man). When prompted to compare her own success (or lack thereof) with them, she became surprisingly candid. Check it out:
"Mine was the biggest success. I just want to put it out there."
Hmm, is there a hint of sarcasm I can detect in that?
When Stan admitted that he hadn't yet seen the movie, Mara pointed out that "Neither did the rest of the world." The rest of the world apparently included her, as she admitted she had also not watched it. However, it was what she divulged next that's most revealing:
"I've certainly been a part of movies that people are not very thrilled about. So it's nice to be in something people love, that you loved working on."
Sounds like Mara enjoyed her time on The Martian a lot more then, which is reassuring to hear. Her thinly veiled comments about her not so fantastic experience only compounds the rumors surrounding the plagued production of Josh Trank's comic book caper.
I gotta say - it's rather refreshing to see a star who's unafraid of a little self-deprecating honesty.
The Martian hits screens on October 2, 2015.
