Song of the Sea was one of the strongest critically receipted movie of 2014. That's saying a lot since it is an animation movie. Of course it is one of the best movies of 2014, and that's saying a lot too.
It was nominated for an Academy Award and it's not hard to see why.
The movie is based on Irish folklore, and the art. The art is just absorbing and beautiful to watch.
I won't go into the movie too much as I'm planning to review this movie as well. But what I do want to talk about here is the underrated movie itself. And I'm not talking about the whole world of course, but there are most people who didn't know about this movie, myself included. And I can't see why. Why don't people talk about this movie as much? Why wasn't it shared on social media like it should have?
There's something about art movies, that doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Especially with one of my favorite movies of all time; Whiplash. I didn't know about this movie till I saw it in the torrents bar, and I said "hey, I got time" and so I downloaded it and watched it over and over again. I understood everything, I felt the passion, I felt the pain, I felt the disgust, I felt everything it planned to throw at me. But that was Whiplash, what about Song of the Sea?
Well, 2014, was not a great year for me. It was tough times, I had to find something, someone to make me feel me again. And at the time I was going through a creative phase because I was learning so much about art, movies and culture I haven't learned before in high school. But I'm going on too much about it, but then again, there is a point, in which is, I found it through a recommendation of my inspiration of the reviews; the Nostalgia Critic, himself, of course it was through his video, but still, I felt compelled to watch something new and something challenged by under hype and under recommendation.
So I did and I must say I can't believe I haven't found it myself, because, I remember I found myself another Oscar gem myself; the Grand Budapest Hotel which was released about the same time in 2014, and I must say I found it interesting, although I thought it was kind of confusing myself, but of course my opinions were affected by emotions at that time and I might revisit that.
But I watched Song of the Sea with some emotions dealt with already. And so I did love it. Why? Well as I said this movie is worth the review and so you'll have to wait for it but for now what I can say is this, the three elements are dealt with properly at least my own three elements that make a movie great as I've said it before.
