It’s happening, folks! As the TrackingBoard reports, the long awaited team-up is finally coming – and to the big screens! Their sources have confirmed that Greg Berlanti, the man that brought us not one, but two successful DC Comic Tv adaptations (Arrow and The Flash) is teaming up with Warner Bros. to direct and executive produce the film. Sarah Schechter will also executive produce alongside Berlanti, while Julia Spiro will oversee for the studio.
What To Expect
Expect this movie to be heavily comedic – HEAVILY. From all the information we’ve gathered, it’s set to be a sort-of team-up cop movie featuring the time traveling Booster Gold, who is the father of time master Rick Hunter, and the intelligent, martial arts master Blue Beetle. This will be an enormous leap as compared to the current slate of films we have coming from Warner Bros., including Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad and The Green Lantern Corps.
Booster Gold, AKA Michael Jon Carter, was a football hero and celebrity in the 25th Century who became publicly disgraced after he was caught gambling on his own games. With his reputation tarnished, Carter stole super-powered relics that allowed traveled back in time, with the plan to become a famous superhero (you can see why he’d be the father of the notorious time master Rick Hunter). Starting out as nothing more than a cocky man with a bruised ego, Booster eventually became a true hero, though one that belonged in a timeline not his own. That’s right – Booster Gold actually learns that he was always meant to travel back in time and become the hero he now is, belonging there. In the comics, we even saw both Booster and Blue become official Justice League members, so it’s no surprise that Warner Bros. has given the green light on the project.
While in college, tech-genius Ted Kord took a job working for his Uncle Jarvis, whom he eventually discovers is a mad scientist, bent on conquering the world with an army of androids. In order to try and stop this, he goes to one of his professors, the original Blue Beetle Dan Garret, and asks for his help. Jarvis and Dan die in the ensuing battle, but not before Garret reveals his identity to him and makes Ted promise to carry on his legacy. Without Garret’s superpowers, Kord uses his many inventions to carry on the Blue Beetle name and fight crime.
From these descriptions, it’s pretty easy to see how the comedic, buddy-cop theme is a brilliant direction for the film. Considering Booster’s cocky and flashy nature, coupled with Kord’s intelligence, then add a dash of neither of them actually have super powers and BAM – you get a fun-hearted, action packed film that will do justice to this dynamic duo.
In future installments, expect to see this team evolve into Justice League members. There are a few things crediting this, first and foremost the comic stories of this duo eventually led up to their inclusion in the league. But second, look at the timing. The current titles from Warner Bros. are Justice League heavy, leading up to the eventual Justice League film. It’s not hard to imagine that Warner Bros. and DC would not include them in the league movie, especially with their hilarious shenanigans being something we really don’t have on the JLA roster. Batman is awesome, but he’s not exactly the life of the party like these two are.
The Past That Pointed This Direction
This announcement really is not a big surprise – it’s not the first time we’ve heard of Booster Gold or Blue Beetle reportedly either getting their own series, or coming into fan-favorite series. Remember when both of these characters showed up on 'Smallville'? That was no accident – a Blue Beetle series was actually in the works to replace 'Smallville' after its ten season run. Unfortunately, the test footage was all we ever got, but maybe that wasn’t an accident given this announcement. And let’s not forget all those rumors about Booster Gold being a member of the upcoming DC team-up series Legends of Tomorrow. It was these rumors that eventually led showrunner Phil Klemmer to state that the characters were involved in a much bigger project then 'Legends'.
Berlanti Is The Perfect Choice
Berlanti’s a huge player in Warner’s DC realm, having nabbed a story credit on both the upcoming Flash and Green Lantern films, not to mention that he’s also behind the forthcoming Supergirl series. Though Supergirl, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and Arrow are separate from the films, Berlanti is credited with provoking a renewed interest in DC characters and is the ideal choice to shepherd Booster Gold. The multi-faceted director, producer, and writer is a well-known fan of the character, having scripted the pilot for a potential Booster Gold series that was once being targeted by Syfy.”
Berlanti has an established, strong relationship with the studio, as his Berlanti Productions has an overall deal with Warner Bros. TV, but bumping him up to the film universe is no surprise given his talents and how well he has done with the DC characters we’ve seen so far.
DC Entertainment is also producing.
Another major piece of information has just been revealed: multiple sources are now reporting that Zak Penn is being courted to leave Marvel’s camp for DC’s playpen, circling to script the Blue Beetle/Booster Gold team-up film. DC you sneaky dogs you!
That’s all the information we currently have, but we will keep you up-to-date as new information surfaces.
