I have always thought that Tom Cruise was a weird person and therefore I didn't really pay attention to his career. I took that into watching his films. After watching Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol I decided to give his films another chance. His films have led me to a profound conclusion - Tom Cruise is the greatest actor of my lifetime. I have 5 reasons why...
1. He Makes Great Movies.
Take a look through his IMDB page and you'll see a list of great films. He has appeared in classics like Top Gun and Jerry Maguire. He's starred in great films like Last Samurai and Minority Report. He has starred in recent greats such as the last few Mission Impossible films and last year's underrated Edge of Tomorrow. His film repertoire is fantastic. I would argue that his film repertoire is much stronger than any other working actor today.
2. He Doesn’t Make Bad Films.
Along with that list of great films one would think there are a bunch of clunkers scattered amongst them. You can't hit it out of the park every time right? Wrong. Tom cruise does not make bad films. He just doesn't. I'm not saying that every movie he makes is a masterpiece, but I am saying that they are all AT LEAST decent films. Only a few of his films are just decent, but even those are better than most working actors. Sir Ben Kingsley, Donald Sutherland, Harrison Ford, and other greats have far more misses than Cruise.
3. He Does His Own Stunts.
Tom Cruise is known for his actions films. He does a lot of them. But it's not the quantity that makes him renown for these action films, it's the quality. No one does action movies like Tom Cruise. He goes all in on every one of his action sequences. He does most of these insane action stunts himself. That moment In Ghost Protocol when he is scaling the world's tallest building, Burj Khalifa in Dubai, it's actually him. What about his latest hit (which is great by the way) -Rogue Nation? He is literally hanging on the outside of plane as it takes off. That's dedication! It's that mindset that leads to his commitment to these intense action scenes and make you believe him, every time.
4. He is the Most Believable Actor.
Despite what you might think of his personal life, Tom Cruise always appear to be a normal guy in his movies. I have never questioned whether he would be able to do something or questioned why he would do a certain action. He is always believable. Specifically, he seems down to earth in his movies. Even when that character is a super-secret spy, he still seems like a normal guy who is highly trained. Sometimes when I see other actors in similar roles and situations, I find it unbelievable and it takes me out of the movie. That has never happened to me while watching Tom Cruise. I just believe the guy
5. He Has Become the Face of Original Science Fiction.
Tom Cruise has taken some interesting roles over the last few years. HE started with the stellar Minority Report and not-so-great War of the Worlds, since then he starred in Oblivion, then Edge of Tomorrow, and he's starring in next year's Mena. That is a pretty clear pattern. He has done this on purpose. He enjoys these roles and he enjoys these films. In a time when true science fiction films are few and far between, he has put his stamp on this genre. These films are not huge tent-pole franchises either, these are all original concepts (although some were based on graphic novels). When everyone is calling out for original ideas from Hollywood, Tom Cruise seems to be one of the very few who is answering that call giving us some stellar science fiction films.
