I'm an 80s child! I was born in 1983, the SAME YEAR that He-Man and the Masters of the Universe debuted! I literally grew up with the He-Man cartoon, and it was my favorite when I was a kid! It was so good that many production companies have tried to revive the franchise in their own ways, despite some failing efforts! Examples are Mike Young Production’s 2002 reboot series, the 1987 live-action film starring Dolph Lundgren, and the 1990 continuation series The New Adventures of He-Man! ...We don’t talk about that one!
Despite all hope seemingly lost for this amazing franchise, it’s now reported that a live-action reboot film is in the pre-planning phase, helmed by director Jeff Wadlow (Kick-Ass 2, Pearl Harbor, Never Back Down) and to be written by Chris Yost, a prominent comic book writer of X-Men titles and writer of Thor: The Dark World (as well as the NEXT Thor movie)! There’s even a possibility of Dolph Lundgren coming on-board to play King Randor! How cool is that?!
So all of this leaves one question in the minds of fans of this franchise: Who will play He-Man in the upcoming film?! I am personally recommending finding a new face to establish the role; however, whether it’s a new face or a seasoned actor, he needs to be huge, have a lot of muscle, and (let’s be honest) be able to pull off a chest harness and speedos! I have a few ideas myself, and I’m gonna share them with you RIGHT NOW!
My name is Action, and these are my Top 10 Fan Castings for the Role of He-Man!
#10 – MASON RYAN
Surprise surprise! “How did I know he was gonna put a few professional wrestlers on this list?!” This is Barri Griffiths, best known for his tenure in World Wrestling Entertainment as Mason Ryan! When I first saw him break into WWE, the first thought that popped in my head was “Wow, he…sorta kinda he looks like He-Man! …Sorta!” And he even had the hair at the time, so he has the physical traits to pull off the role! I’m not convinced he has the acting chops for the role, but the look is there, at least! I ranked him at #10 for this reason, but who knows?! He’s definitely barbarian material! Maybe they can build on his acting prowess and he can prove me wrong! Anything is possible! But if you don’t like Mason Ryan, I know another wrestler you can add to your list,…
#9 – (AND HIS NAME IS) JOHN CENA!!!
That’s right! I went there! While this is technically a troll post for the sake of trolling, John Cena can…actually pull it off! He’s a future WWE Hall of Famer and a household name in professional wrestling these days! Also, for what it’s worth, he has a couple of…decent action film credits under his belt –The Marine and 12 Rounds! Not amazing films, I understand, but it’s still something! I do have one fair assessment: Cena has one primary fan base, and that’s kids! If he were to be cast as He-Man, that would no doubt bring attention to the Masters of the Universe franchise from today’s youth, which may do some good at breathing life back into the franchise, so I wouldn’t quite rule him out! Hey, maybe women will like it, too!
#8 – ROMAN REIGNS
Last wrestler, I promise! Real name Joe Anoa’i, Roman Reigns is a rising star in the WWE, and he comes from powerful genes! The Anoa’i family brought some powerful wrestlers into the world, like “High Chief” Peter Maivia, Rikishi, Umaga, the Uso Twins, and even Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson! Roman himself is young, in great shape, and is a freaking beast! He’s as powerful as he is agile, and if producers can look past the Samoan heritage for this role (like they did when The Rock portrayed Hercules), Roman can give them a good performance!
#7 – JOSH HUTCHERSON
I’m thinking outside of the box with this one, so hear me out! WHAT IF…we get a young, well-built actor, cast him as Prince Adam, and work the studio magic to put him into a larger body when he transforms into He-Man?! Not a bad idea, if you think about it, and it’s definitely doable! I couldn’t help but think of Josh Hutcherson as a very convincing Prince Adam! His role as Peeta Mellark in The Hunger Games is practically Prince Adam already! Pacifist, youthful spirit, and always gets his behind saved by the “Teela” of the film! He’s definitely Prince Adam material! I know many are going to argue this one down, but if you know me, you know that I like options, so here’s another option to consider! Think it over, producers!
#6 – JASON MOMOA
If Aquaman doesn’t work out for Jason Momoa, perhaps He-Man would be a good fit for him! Jason has already played one barbarian (Conan the Barbarian), and fans will surely remember him for his role as Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones, so I have no doubt he’d do well as He-Man! He’d definitely bring intensity to the role, that’s for sure! Plus, there’s just something awesome about picturing Jason Momoa riding into battle on an armored-up green dragon/tiger! You’re picturing it now too, aren’t you?! Like I said, if he ever hangs up Aquaman, he should consider it!
#5 – TOM HARDY
Tom Hardy’s always been a fan favorite in his films! Critics aside, I loved his performance as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, and he definitely gave an intense performance in Warrior! Tom expressed interest in playing Bane again in the upcoming Batman films, and while he did pretty much carry that movie with his performance, I recommend letting the Christopher Nolan era rest and move on to something new! I wonder who he should play- *gasps* HE-MAN!
#4 – CHRIS EVANS
Good physique, good age range, and he’s already portrayed that “Prince Adam into He-Man” transformation with Captain America: The First Avenger! That film proves that a muscle-bound actor can be visually changed to a smaller, weaker version of himself for storyline purposes! Granted Chris is tied down to Marvel films for the foreseeable future, but that first half hour of Captain America: The First Avenger is merit enough to make him an eligible contender for He-Man! I wouldn’t doubt he’d give a fine performance!
#3 – JOE MANGANIELLO
This, ladies and gentlemen, is Joe Manganiello! I’ve always enjoyed Joe’s performances, from Flash Thompson in the Spider-Man Trilogy to werewolf Alcide Herveaux in True Blood to even best friend/attorney Brad Morris in How I Met Your Mother, and I’m sure women everywhere liked his performance in Magic Mike! Point is he’s a well-seasoned actor who is able to adjust to pretty much any type of role, plus he prides himself in fitness! There’s no doubt that he’d be a great candidate to portray Eternia’s champion! Any why not?! He’d definitely have fun with the role, and can pull off He-Man’s friendly nature outside of combat, as well as the child-like nature of Prince Adam when not transformed! The only thing working against him is his age, considering he’s almost 40! Still, he’d make an awesome He-Man!
#2 – LIAM MCINTYRE
HAIL SPARTACUS! Liam Mcintyre would make a great pick! He’s not too young, but not too old, and his role as Spartacus is enough merit already to keep him in mind for the role of He-Man! Liam took over the role in Spartacus: Vengeance after the unfortunate death of Andy Whitfield, and considering his performance kept the short-lived series action-packed and entertaining, I think many fans would get behind him taking the helm as He-Man! I’d definitely pay to watch it!
#1 – KELLAN LUTZ
“HERCULES HERCULES!” Kellan seems to have the right balance! He’s got a good build, a young look, and that “He-Man smile!” His acting resume gives him some amazing credentials for the role as well! Poseidon in Immortals! John Smilee in The Expendables 3! Hercules in The Legend of Hercules! He’s had some ups and downs in his career, but every good actor has a few bad films early in their career! Just look at Arnold Schwarzeneggar’s Hercules in New York! …On second though, don’t! We don’t talk about that one either! Regardless, Kellan Lutz has had some success amongst his few flops, but he’s still an up-and-coming action star! Maybe a push as He-Man can give him a foot in the door to the success he’s looking for! He’s definitely got my vote!
So what do you think of my line-up?! Who do you think would make a great He-Man?! Let's hear your ideas!
My name is Action! That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it!
